A friend of mine in rural Minnesota says that a related group (Hutterites, I think) are the only ones who can keep going there as independent farmers any more. They're incredibly frugal and hard working, they don't borrow from banks, and they don't use *much* gas-powered machinery (their rules on this kind of thing are as complicated as kosher laws).
