Notes from the Presidential race

John Edwards was back in Houston last week raising money. That's unfortunately probably the last we'll see of the Kerry campaign, given that it'll be on public funds starting next week.

Joe Conanson looks at the funding behind that anti-Kerry "Swift Boat Veterans" group and finds - surprise! - it's chock full of familiar GOP benefactors, including the current champion of Texas Republican giving, Bob "no relation to Rick" Perry. Funny how that never seems to get mentioned in press coverage of that group's efforts, though.

I've got to agree with Byron - this Chron column by CP Houston is on the short list of dumbest things anyone at that paper has ever written. Sadly, that's really saying something.

The writing is pretty poor, but that's nothing new at the Comical. And ultimately, the conclusion -- that Bush will not lose unless Iraq blows up or the economy loses steam -- is hardly an outrageous, out of the mainstream conclusion. Incumbents rarely lose when the economy is recovering, unless there is scandal or a foreign policy debacle (I know you lefties keep hoping for that last, but it's not clear that the electorate is even close to agreeing, yet).

I just don't know why they bother to publish this guy at all. I recall at least one previous editorial being pretty weak.

I think CP Houston's column demonstrates the schizophrenia on the Chron's editorial board. They endorsed GW big time in 2000, but since that then have run a stream of anti-Bush editorials on just about every possible issue. Seems to me that this is the signal that the Chron intends to endorse him once again...as if it makes any difference to the Texas vote.

Has this election boiled down to who make their lies believable? The truth is all the American people need to know. This voter has enough faith in men and our way I life to know that the American people will always do the right thing when given the facts. Wasn't it Martin Luther King who said "The truth will set you free."?

Give us the truth an we the people will do the rest.
