Further evidence of my decrepitude

Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the day I started college. Classes at Trinity actually started on August 23, 1984, but freshman orientation began on the 18th. Back in those enlightened days when the drinking age was still 19, nobody really cared all that much if the freshmen were knocking back a few brews at a party. We had plenty of opportunities to do so during that time.

Not unrelatedly, this means it's time for my 20-year high school reunion. I don't know what my travel schedule will be yet, but I figure I'll have a few free hours to wander around Manhattan on the Saturday. I should note that the last time I attended one of these, Rice beat Texas that Sunday night - I wound up redoing my return flight to make it to the game, which cost me about $300, but being there in the stands with the MOB to see it happen more than made up for it. They're playing on a different weekend this year, in September, not that I'm expecting history to repeat itself. But I can dream, can't I?

Jack Black Welcomes You Back!

The eyes of Texas are upon you.

Ahhh, yes....the Jack Black party. And Playfair. And your freshmen mentor group.

Name dropping alert....There was one guy in my mentor group who only came to a couple of the events named George Maloof Jr from NM. He seemed like a nice enough guy, kinda quiet. I didn't recognize the name at the time but I see it everywhere now.

His brothers own the Sacremento Kings (Gavin is a TU grad, I think). George owns The Palms Resort and Casino in Las Vegas home of Celebrity Poker on Bravo, had a couple of dates with Brittany Spears, and reportedly was in attendance at the recent Nikki Hilton nuptials.

Next to selling nachos beside soap star Deirdre Hall at rodeo, that's my biggest Lettermanesque "Brush with Greatness".

I remember thinking at the time how great it was to have FREE alcohol at the Jack Black party. It never occurred to me that this could be, shall we say, problematic. Jack Daniel's sponsoring a college party? What could possibly go wrong? Later, though, I saw people in my dorm selling plasma for drinking money. Then, of course, there were the alcohol-related tragedies in the 90s that gutted the frats and sororities... what was the topic again?

Yo, Patrick - what years were you at TU? I'm a classmate of Chuck's (84-88), and I think I remember George Maloof. Was he a tall guy with wavy black hair?

Crispy, George wasn't a particularly tall guy. He was about 5' 10" and played as DB for the football team. He didn't stick around Trinity for more than a semester or two before he transferred to UNLV where he walked on and made the squad there. (On the subject of football, here's another flashback moment...the Sperm Game.)

I was there at the same time you were there ('84-87). I know several members of the "I Slept with C.S. Club." There were t-shirts at one point, right? Or was that the Jack Daniels clouding my memory?

I was a nondescript guy in the corner at most of Chuck and Greg's functions. My one claim to fame was that at one party S.L. looked around the room and said, "Man, I've kissed everyone in this room." I raised my hand and said, "Not me." When she offered to rectify that oversight, I declined. I was a burgeoning Republican prude even then. ;-)

Whoa - serious flashback. I'v got a big ol' goofy grin on my face right now.

In the woulda-shoulda-coulda column, I'd have taken Ms. S.L. up on the offer. But then, I'm kind of biased there. ;-)

As for the ISWCS Club, I don't recall any t-shirts. That whole thing was SO much more innocent than people think - it involved a massive slumber party, the still-incomprehsible-to-me film Eraserhead, and a fair amount of (IIRC) homemade sangria, but no hanky-panky (the "slept" part was no euphemism). As you might imagine, my parents were somewhat concerned about their Catholic school grad.

And I think the Maloof I knew was actually one Lewis Malouf from the aforementioned Catholic school. Dang - gonna have to pull out some yearbooks now.
