Bowl bound, baby

The Rice Owls are going to a bowl game. For the first time since 1961.

Holy $#|+!

I'm still getting used to the idea. After all I've seen since 1988, it's a little unreal. But at least it's unreal in a good way.

I don't yet know what game, when it will be, where it will be, or who the opponent will be. Doesn't matter - it's a bowl game. Schedule permitting, I'll be there. Hot dog!

Rice will most likely play in the PapaJohns.com bowl in Birmingham Alabama on Dec. 23. Their opponent will probably be South Florida.

Congrats to the Owls, indeed. But ... uh ... there's a PapaJohns.com bowl ... in Alabama? After the way UT collapsed at the end of the season, perhaps Mack Brown should offer the Owls their bowl slot. UT could probably beat South Florida. ;)

The information I found said that Rice would most likely play Utah in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl on December 23 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played in Amon G. Carter Stadium on the campus of TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.

Although Tulsa had a better overall record than Rice, Rice finished fourth in C-USA, so Kenneth is right, the fourth place C-USA team goes to the Armed Forces Bowl.

Congrats to the Owls! Some folks think with so many bowls these days, that going to a bowl isn't a big deal.

It is. Not only for the payout and the exposure, but coaches will tell you that one of the biggest advantages is the extra practice. Teams not going to a bowl are done for the year. But if you are going to a bowl, you get almost an extra month of practice. That's like getting an extra spring practice period.

Rice is going to New Orleans according to the C-USA commissioner in an interview on SportsRadio 610 this morning.

Official announcement at 9 am.

Can we (Texas) have your offensive coordinator? He was a pretty good QB round these parts, and we would like him back.
