Biggio 3000

Congratulations, Craig Biggio. For today, any questions about your pursuit of 3000 are irrelevant. You made it, and you deserve the glory that goes with it. See you in five in Cooperstown.

I'd just like to note that I gave away a ticket to tonight's game. Worst. Decision. Ever.

Nonetheless, mega-congrats to Biggio. Did anyone else get emotional when Bagwell walked onto the field with him?

I was listening to Buster Olney and Eric Cassillias filling in for Mike and Mike this morning and Eric was having trouble with placing Biggio in the Hall of Fame arguing that he wasn't a "great" player. He basically said that at no point in his career could you ever say "Craig Biggio is one of the 5 best players in baseball".

That's silly. I think he equates sexy with greatness. RBIs and HRs are sexy. Doing what it takes every single day to win is great. I thought it was fitting that on the night when he got the 3000th hit he went 5 for 6 with 2 infield singles. He's 40+ years old busting his ass down the line hustling out a pair of hits on balls that don't get out of the infield, the second with 2 outs in the 11th prolonging a game for Carlos Lee's walk-off slam. Is it sexy? No. But if I had a son and I wanted him to model his game after one player, I'd have him watch Craig Biggio, 'cuz he's great dammit.

Of course Olney piped up and said "I think Peter Gammons said it best when he said that you could argue that Biggio is the greatest offensive 2nd basemen ever. Eric, I'm a HoF voter and Biggio's getting my vote."

'Nuff said.

Congrats to Biggio, but it was quite disturbing to read that his first hit was off Hershiser in 1988. To this Dodgers fan that means Biggio has had an entire career since my guys last went to the World Series.
