An Austin judge has cleared the way for the 55 MPH speed limit signs to go up starting on Monday.
I had an argument with my friend and coworker Andrea about this on Friday. She believes the lower speed limit will help acheive the NOX reductions for which it is intended, as well as reducing auto fatalities. I'll stipulate to the safety benefits of a lower speed limit, but unless the cops are out in force writing tickets, I don't think too many people will really drive slower. The 55 MPH speed limit was routinely ignored when it was the law of the land. I see no reason why people will go along with it now that they're used to going faster.Posted by Charles Kuffner on March 02, 2002 to The great state of Texas
