A perfect Marriage

In the what-took-it-so-long department: Steven Bochco is developing a new series for HBO:

Bochco's new series, Marriage, will be a look inside the lives of a couple, married for between five and six years. The entire show will unfold in the couple's bedroom, bathroom and changing closet.

You might expect that a TV show produced by Bochco, whose notable accomplishments include bringing Dennis Franz's big white ass into America's living room, would be a license to include cussin' and nekkidness. You would be correct:

Bochco said Marriage was developed three years ago and he knew then that HBO was the only place it could air. He has not offered the show elsewhere.

"The conceit of this series, it plays out in its entirety of the bedroom, bathroom and changing room, the most intimate, private places where a couple interacts with each other," he said. "I don't think you can do that without seeing the way people comport themselves."

The show will launch in January, 2004. Get those VCRs and TiVos ready.

The possibilities are endless. "Dear, could you please flush twice if you think once might not be enough?" "I think we need to paint the bedroom ceiling". "If you don't have clean underwear, then wear yesterday's again".

At least, leaving the kitchen out of it, we won't have foodie talk. I prefer the toilet jokes.

I believe that there are still some places where the cameras do not belong. This series sounds as if it's hit the Holy Trinity....

Steven Bochco is a victim of his generation. He thinks if characters curse, engage in bodily functions and get nekikd, (bedroom and bathroom suggest there will be plenty of both), it's great art. Never mind that he hasn't written a credible, interesting female character in 10 years or that he has an uncanny knack for casting women poorly. A Bochco production where half of the cast is female, set in a closet, bathroom and bedroom? Think I'll hang up my clothes, brush my teeth and go to bed.
