While it's true that the author of this silly review of Return of the King, which has been rightfully mocked by Ginger and Jim, clearly knows nothing about what kind of movie women like, she also clearly knows nothing about what kind of movies men like. Don't get me wrong here, the "Rings" trilogy has been really good and all, but on the Joe Bob metric, it comes up rather short, with a distinct lack of breasts and way, WAY too much plot to get in the way of the action. Take it from me, honey, if you want to understand guys and movies, you really should read someone who knows his stuff first.
Posted by Charles Kuffner on December 22, 2003 to TV and movies | TrackBackAlthough part of her review was indeed on the silly side, I must agree with her that it did lack some emotional depth for me. I remember being completely wrapped up in the books when I read them, where now I find myself wishing to get it(the movie) over with. Not that I dislike the movie, I think it's great. But maybe the hyping of it, the length(I enjoy viewing them better at home on dvd), and remembering the spirit of the book just lead to the inevitable letdown. I felt more emotionally invested with the characters in the book than the film because the book can take its time to flesh out the characters more, the film due to time constraints makes them feel shallow. No fault of the filmmakers, just my observation. I've spoken to other people who have felt the same and they weren't all women so I think she could've left that part alone. Plus I could have did without the long gazes between Frodo and Sam. You could cut the sexual tension in the air with a knife. Just kidding!
