Real Men of Genius

OK, I admit it: I have a soft spot for those Budweiser "Real Men of Genius" ads which have migrated recently from radio to TV. Apparently, there were a lot more of these spots on the radio than I knew (this is the first negative side effect I can think of for my policy of changing stations whenever the music stops) - this page has downloadable MP3s of all of them.

One thing I didn't know, which is noted in a St. Louis Post-Dispatch article reprinted at the bottom of that page, is that the singer in those ads is a somebody:

The 30-second spots feature an over-the-top, 1980s-style rock ballad sung by David Bickler, the former lead singer of "Survivor." Bickler's rendition of "Eye of the Tiger" was the anthem of the popular movie "Rocky III."

[...]

As for the music, [ad agency] DDB Chicago approached Sandy Torano, a musician and producer, to write a "cheesy '80s song." Torano immediately thought of Bickler.

"David Bickler is a friend of mine," said Torano, who owns Scandal Music in
Chicago. "I told them, 'If you are going do an '80s parody, why don't you get
the real thing?'"

Bickler, he said, was a good sport.

Um, not to be a big meanie or anything, but of course Bickler was a good sport. I mean, what else is the former lead singer of "Survivor" doing to generate income these days?

I'm so saaaaddd I can't find these songs anywhere. Budweiser really did a good job of cleaning them off the web. But they're so funny! I heard them on a cd my cousin had from back when they were still available online. maybe she'll burn it for me...

Your Commercials keep us coming back for more. And more. And yet more. Without you, Tv and radio would just be elevator music and informercials.

What are you, 17? Bickler was retired because he sold so many albums in the 80s that he's able to spend his days in places we'll just be dreaming about our whole lives. There was life and some very big bands that made a butt-load of money before 1999 ya know.

Did anyone download all of them to their PC? If so, I would be interested in acquiring them. Please email me at [email protected] if you can help me.

Thanks,

Kameron

If you can find a site with the audios/lyrics/videos, it is best to get them while they are out there. I have been to a few sites that have been warned to take the media down, or be hit with legal actions. Companies are stingy like that. Anways, they are great ads.

Here is the Constant Collar Putter-Upper on:

Today we salute you, Mr. Constant Collar Putter-Upper. You, bedecked in popped collar, teach us that we no longer have to live with a cold back-of-the-neck. Sure, your pink alligator polo may look feminine to some, but not to the 17 other frat guys wearing the same thing at the bar. Where others may see thoughtless fashion conformity, you preach a higher gospel. You preach of a world where it's okay for a man to go tanning. You ask, “Why can’t we wear make-up, and use shampoo with lavender essence?” So crack open an ice-cold Bud Light, Mr. Abercrombie (or is it Fitch?), because we all know, when we really need a piece of gum, you might have one... in your man-purse.

Survivor are still doing great to this day, thank you very much.

Dave Bickler has a new solo album in the works. And Survivor with lead vocalist Jimi Jamison have just released a new album called "Reach."

i need real men of genuis cd's that are on the radio like Mr. bonlessbuffalo wing inventor

Posted by: goerge on July 4, 2006 6:47 PM

For what it's worth, let me just say the band SURVIVOR, and especially with DAVE BICKLER on lead vocals, was the most under-appreciated Rock'n'Roll band of the last 25 years. You listen to the band's first 4 CD's, with Bickler at the helm, and you can't tell me his voice doesn't kick ass over any vocalists of his era (i.e. Steve Perry, Lou Grahm, Dennis De Young, Paul Rogers, etc.) Just listen to 4 songs and that's all you should have to hear: "Nothing Can Shake Me", "Heart's a Lonely Hunter", "Poor Man's Son" and "Ever Since The World Began". The dude could flat out scream a rocker or sing a ballad and never lose tune. His voice has lost some of that strength over the years, but, hey - he's still a damn good singer and a classy guy to boot. Sorry to ramble!
