KLOL changes format

Damn. Did anyone see this coming?

KLOL, 101.1 FM announced Friday that station has changed formats. The station switched from a rock format to a Latino music format branded as Mega 101.

The station's web site was listed as under construction, but KLOL's former morning show hosts Walton and Johnson announced on their web site that they were informed Thursday night of the change.

The radio hosts stated on WaltonandJohnson.com that, "Thursday night Walton and Johnson were informed by lower-level management sources via a last-minute phone call that there would be no Walton and Johnson Show tomorrow. In its place would be Hispanic music programs."

Walton and Johnson were the #7 rated morning show in the latest ratings. I'm happy to see them go since I think they're a couple of crapmeisters, but I'm shocked it happened like this.

What this means is that there's no rock station in Houston which isn't limited to a time period. You've got your Oldies Rock on 107.5, your Classic Rock on 93.7,and your Alternative Rock on 94.5, but no one station that might play anything from the Beatles and Cream to Collective Soul and Green Day, which KLOL used to do. If there's a better definition of "vast radio wasteland" than that, I don't know what it is.

Found via Metroblogging Houston.

UPDATE: Various KLOL fans have found this old post and are expressing their angst over the format change. Google's cache still has the old KLOL web page in it. This discussion thread was complaining about KLOL's format - one can perhaps see how a change might have been in the works, though clearly what they got was not what they were asking for. I hope Ken Hoffman and.or John Nova Lomax has something to say about why this happened soon.

UPDATE: Pete piles on. Jim D wails. Michael finds a scapegoat. Callie has some words from Walton and Johnson. Kevin examines his non-FM options.

Well, that's a preset on my car radio that needs to be changed. Of course, the only other stations on the FM dial I ever listen to are 93.7, 106.9, 107.5 and occasionally 94.5. So there's really no reason to change it when I have 12 FM settings available.

It's getting to be pretty slim pickings out there. And as my wife would surely attest, harder to find a station playing music when others are talking or in a commercial break.

And if you think Walton and Johnson are crapmeisters, you obviously never heard Lamont and Tonelli on Bay Area radio.

Dear God, this is sad. I've been listening to KLOL for 25 years. It stopped being my primary radio station when it got bought out by Clear Channel, but the KLOL has always been the Rock station in Houston.

I remember having KLOL on my walkman when I was running one day in 1990, and Dana Steele came on to tell Houstonians that SRV had been killed.

Posted by: 'stina on November 12, 2004 7:50 PM

I tried to E-Mail the gawds to try and start a petition against the CC bastards to get OUR station back!!!!!!!! ROCK 101 RULED!? PETITION....PETITION!!!!! been a loyal listner for 34 years...those CC bastards....

Posted by: Steve Evans on November 12, 2004 8:15 PM

KLOL's morning program was sexist, homophobic, Republican, and just crap. I wish I was sad about them changing formats and how they were treated, but why should their workplace be any better than anyone else laboring in Houston?

Republican Rock? How wrong is that?

Clear Channel is crap, too. I cannot bear radio in Houston anymore. Even KHOU has some low rent jock spinning classical now. Sad, very sad.

Posted by: Jaye on November 12, 2004 9:33 PM

No one up here (Pocatello, Idaho) believes me when I tell them that the radio up here is better than it is down in Houston. That's just pathetic.

Posted by: R. Alex on November 12, 2004 11:42 PM

I may just have to give it all up and become a hardcore rap fanatic...

Is this the end? Is life as a rock radio listener not worth living any more...?

Wow, just read about this on Burnt Orange. I grew up on KLOL even when I didn't listen to it (my mom did). I remember Jolly and Jay from the 70's and the reports of the "Big Bird" in Conroe! Scary!

Well I am down in Corpus now and there is nothing to choose from here. I recommend satellite radio, its worth the 10 bucks a month if you get a portable or semi portable jobby like the Roadys.

Now I have nothing to listen to in my truck. I'm 26, Born and raised in Houston, and I'm hispanic. Rock is my music. Thanks for nothng CC. I don't no what to listen to in the mornings either...Walton & Johnson rule.

Posted by: Daniel on November 13, 2004 11:54 AM

So what happens to all of the other dj's like Wendy or Outlaw Dave. I cannot believe that they would take away such an awesome rock station and an institution that is a part of Houstons history.

Posted by: andrew on November 13, 2004 1:02 PM

That's just not right! Have you people gone insane? Walton & Johnson are a Houston staple, and where are we suppose to hear Metalica? It is my hope that W & J will be back on the air and reguardless of where that is, your listeners will be sure to follow.

Posted by: Shelley on November 13, 2004 1:07 PM

THATS IT!!! I HAVE HAD IT WITH HOUSTON RADIO. SOMEONE NEEDS TO SAVE HOUSTONS AIRWAVES!!! WE AS CITIZENS OF THIS CITY NEED TO PUT TOGETHER A RALLY, CONCERT / FUNDRAISER TO START A NEW ROCK STATION, AND BRING BACK OUTLAW DAVE... WALTON AND JOHNSON , AND THE REST OF THE KLOL STAFF. HOW COULD CC DO THIS?? FLIP THROUGH THE DIAL AND COUNT HOW MANY LATINO STATIONS WE HAVE. THIS IS REDICULOUS. WE ALL NEED TO WORK TOGETHER AND GET SOMETHING GOING!!!

Posted by: Mike on November 13, 2004 1:48 PM

i want to fight!! i want our rock station back!! who will play the ozz man? or ac/dc all the good stuff. this is america! i know we have a lot of hispanic but does that meen we have no stations for all of us other english speaking nation!!!!!!
clear channel you suck! i think your upper managment are discriminating against us.
REMEMBER THE ALAMO BITCH!!!!

Wow! I moved to Georgia from Houston back in March. I was shocked when a friend from Houston told me last night that KLOL was gone. How sad is that? KLOL was the soundtrack of my life for 15 years. I was intoduced to so much music by KLOL, including Rush, SRV and much more. It feels like an old friend has died. I guess the 5 Spanish FM stations werent enough for Houston. I have a feeling KKRW will change its format to play more Ozzy and Metallica now. That seems to be the trend now...1 Rock station that will give you everything from the Stones to Nickelback. It is definitely the end of a great era!

Posted by: Scott on November 13, 2004 2:25 PM

how many people actually listen to that Latino crap anyway? They try to hard to please the minorities instead of the majority. I was driving in the morning and I thought my radio had broken or something and couldnt figure it out until I saw the newspaper, and it pissed me off.

Posted by: chris on November 13, 2004 3:24 PM

Walton and Johnson were just a couple of talking heads, so I'm not that sorry to have THEM go, but they're leaving us with totally slim pickings around here (drive time morning radio has been horrendous around here since KLOL canned Blake and Charley, but that's a different debate) I never cared for the second-hand humor and wish they'd just run the music and talk less.

We've long needed another good rock station that played deep cuts and real rock (attn KKRW: American Pie-and indeed ANYTHING Don McLean ever did-is NOT rock!!)

When I heard about this yesterday I was shocked, and thought "I wonder if XM radio paid CC to do this?" then I found out that CC owns a large interest in XM Radio--could it be that the demographics of the rock audience is more likely to run out and buy a satellite radio setup? I feel so used and manipulated!! I guess I'm going to have to take a serious look at both XM and Serius now

Posted by: al on November 13, 2004 3:34 PM

Thank You Shelley, W&J are a Houston staple. KLOL off the air? And for what...some minority latino bullsh*t? What is this? Its sad, really sad.

Posted by: Jordan on November 13, 2004 3:37 PM

KLOL, the only real rock station in Houston, well it is really cold here in Hell. The only thing, and I mean ONLY thing Mexican music is good for is videos, without being able to see the women, it is completly useless. The ICON has been with us through all of the hard times: the death of SRV, the second by second updates of the World Trade Centers coming down, Metallica's fire incident, the holiday blood drives, supporting benefits for fallen firefighters, injured children, fallen motorcyclists, and fallen police officers. Thanks to CC, [ the evil empire], all of that is history and we are on our own. Ineed my Outlaw Dave fix, Ineed my Wendy Miller fix, I need my 4:20 break. I say let's flood their e-mail with complaints, hard and heavy, so many that we shut down their server. Come on Houston, I know we have it in us, they want war, we can give them war.

Posted by: rob on November 13, 2004 3:37 PM

I can't even begin to understand it. Going around Houston literally hearing random conversations about Tejano music instead of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" on 101 makes you realize how important of a staple this frequency has become to Houston. Bring it back!!!! Damn Clear Channel

Posted by: Van on November 13, 2004 3:44 PM

God, please smite Clear Channel - they already suck, so your smite on them should be pleasurable.

Posted by: Rich on November 13, 2004 3:48 PM

i cant believe klol is gone its all i have listened to literally all my life, radio is dead and so is rock n roll. with so many hispanic channels on the radio i dont know why they couldnt leave one rock station. i will miss hearing metallica, ozzy, kiss, guns n roses, the best groups ever. this sucks!!!!!!!!!!! i hate clear channel.

Posted by: freak76 on November 13, 2004 4:32 PM

Let it be known that even the hispanics in houston are sayin', "What the F**k?!" I was born and raised in H-town and grew up on 101. Everybody I know: white, black, hispanic, long-hair, shaved head...EVERYBODY'S pissed about this! My brothers and sisters, we CANNOT let this go unchallenged. We have GOT to make a statement to people who think they can take "Mandatory Metallica", the Queen of the Midday world and Outlaw Dave away from us. They do not know who they're f**kin' with.

It is a terrible day in Houston radio. 101 is gone. What a tragedy, as many of us grew up listening to KLOL. My heart is heavy today as we continue to see Houston radio narrowed for caucausian listeners. No offense to the latino rockers out there who will no doubt miss KLOL too, however, there is little doubt this is a station that had as the majority of its listeners
white males. I am sickened by this change as I have been listening since about 1975. Although it hasnt been my main station in the last couple years, I listened at some time during the day, every day. Everyone needs to contact Clear Channel and express our outrage. If they do not respond a boycott should be considered for as a dedicated rock fan, there are not many options left for me in the city of Houston. It is time to step up fellow rock fans and try to stop this lunacy.

I just moved here a year ago from Victoria and I think ALL HOUSTON ROCK RADIO SUCKS-HAS FOR YEARS. Walton and johnson were racist neo-conservative pricks deserving of thier fate. I mean come on, all those stereotyped characters from 2 people. I think they (and thier kind)were mocked by SNL last year. Now were all "LIVIN LA VIDA LOCA!!!" from-Young Hispanic male-

Posted by: Sam on November 13, 2004 7:03 PM

What can I say? This is something that Clear Channel is notorious for. KLOL used to kick major ass back in the 80's and early 90's. How many of you remember when Linda Silk was the only DJ that would play Metallica, Maiden, or Priest on Saturday nights. Before there was Outlaw Dave there was Grego, the head outlaw that started Outlaw Radio in the first place. Radio was actually fun to listen to from 7 to midnight every day. Then years later CC bought them out and the station went to total crap. KLOL would only play the same three songs from the same handful of bands and that was it. This is just the final nail in the coffin that was to be the death of KLOL. I would recommend spending the time to fight Clear Channel to change back but is it really worth it? We'll all be better off if another company would invest in the Houston rock market. Whether we're stuck with satellite radio or listening to CDs, life will go on. Sad as it is, it will be without KLOL but we're all better off without Clear Channel. But for all those that would like to fight back, e-mail this guy at Clear Channel: omarvthompson@clearchannel.com and tell him what you think.

Posted by: James on November 13, 2004 7:17 PM

KLOL sucked most of the time, heck, a true 10-percenter would change the dial right after hearing "Eat It, everyday".

Except, what about Loch Siebehausen? Man, that guys needs a job. Please someone hire him, he's a great guy and we dont need him roaming the streets, so please help Loch.

I didnt care for the music much, I prefer 91.7 Rice radio, those college kids help keep me feeling younger with the interesting mix, but best of all, no commercials. KPFT 90.1 has some good music shows, and some of those wacked-out lefties are entertaining in very small doses, but they actually do do commercials in their own way.

Walton & Johnson are none of the aforementioned, neither sexist, homophobic, nor republican. Any true fan would tell you that. They are no more sexist or homophobic as any letter writer or reader on this site. And they are definetely not republicans, that's laughable. Just two very good decent people, pseudo-celebrities, who are very talented and informative. Ok, Steve has maybe a little more natural talent, but both are pretty quick on their feet. If they were to go away, I would be a little sad, but we did have some good times together.

Dean & Rog are ok, but again I can't deal with the music. Like KLOL, I've heard most of those songs a million times. I'll never get satellite radio, if you have a cd player and/or cassette, why do you need it? I like my choice of music the best, not some playlist some other goober picked out.

It does suck. I understand the history of KLOL, and I know and like all the people who have had a part with it, and sakes alive we got way more than plenty Mexican music stations. Fer crying out loud, what the hell are them management folks thinking? What a bunch of prime a-holes. They just pissed on thousands of fans. Ha-ha, see 'ya! Screw you "Mr. Doesn't speak Spanish". Up yours "Ms. No Habla".

Gone is a tradition, in the wind like yesterdays toenails.

I know KLOL had a huge audience, so why? It's shocking, aggravating, irritating, and disturbing.

I guess in the end, the "LOL" did stand for "lots of laughs", because you just have to laugh at the supreme idiocy of the jake-legs who made that decision.

And Chris Baker is not funny.

Mandatory metallica, out to lunch show, the 420 break, walton and johnson, wendy miller, outlaw dave, locke stebenhousen, uncle nasty, the pitt, 40 min rock block, the rock and roll up your sleeve blood drives, and countless other local event promotions, ALL GONE!!! Just like that???!!!!

I am still in a total state of shock.. It's not like there are countless other latino stations out there to satatisfy the pallet of even the most discriminating listener, why do we need a latino top 40? I am hispanic, and like most other hispanic out there who grew up in houston I listened to KLOL. We did fine though out the years before Clear Channel would be doing better without them. I don’t appreciate them trying to accommodate us force feeding crap down our throats. KLOL is a monument, it is part of Houston. Just because it is not an actual building or structure does not make it any less important. CC needs to understand their actions are just as damaging as if they tore down a famous historical landmark like the astrodome. I feel like I have been slapped in the face. I am tired of pencil pushers This is corporate america playing big brother by telling us they know what is best. This cannot be the end of KLOL, I refuse to believe it.

If anybody has any plans of opposing CC's reign and trying to bring back what is rightfully ours, I am interested in helping the cause.

Sorry, I cannot just eat this one Mr. Walton.

I cannot not believe those f***ing coporate bastards took away an institution of a radio station. Its bad enough that we hardly have any rock to listen to at all, and now to replace a rock station with a 6th mexican station??? How many stations you damn mexicans need? Everyone on here wants to take out there aggression and write e-mails to the corporate pigs at CC, but I have a better idea. The best way to hurt CC is to invest your money in satellite radio, and since CC has a stake in XM radio already I HIGHLY suggest to invest money in Sirius, I have had it for 3 months and have NOT listened to the radio at all!!!!! DEFINATELY WORTH IT!!!!!!!! So to truly stick it to CC, just go out and buy Sirius!!!

This is bullshit. I was listening to KLOL yesterday morning while running errands and I thought it was strange they were playing "I'm Free." I had to run into a store really quick, so I didn't hear the end of the song. When I got back and turned the car on, I thought something was wrong with my radio. Then, I later learned "I'm Free" was the first song our KLOL played and the last. I couldn't help but cry. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO THE DJ'S. IF ANY OF YOU GUYS FROM 101 READ THIS, WE LOVE YOU GUYS AND MISS YOU. WENDY, YOU'RE THE BEST. THANK YOU AND TAKE CARE.

Posted by: Nichole on November 14, 2004 10:18 AM

I don't live in Houston or Texas, but my friend Dave does. He is so pissed off that some Hispanic station came into Houston and fucked his favorite station over.

He says that he knows what happened. He did a little research and Mega101 is some big radio station from Miami. They came into Houston and bought out Rock101 and screwed Texas over in the same instant.

My suggestion: start a mass riot and kill Mega101 for playing 10101 Latino songs in a row.

Posted by: Trevor Saller on November 14, 2004 11:25 AM

Complain to CC! Ues e-mail regular mail voice mail, hell even air mail, but COMPLAIN.
Demand a list of their advetisers and DO NOT SUPPORT THEM, even if it means sacrificing that new car you want.
Remember, they are more likely to listen if you dont call them stupid fucks (even though they are) or other names.
Keep the faith we can get OUR station back!

This sucks. I really don't like Walton and Johnson, but I like Rock and Roll. There is just some stuff they play that you don't here on The Buzz (which is a CC station as well) or The Arrow (also CC).

While KLOL isn't my "main station" any longer, I stil listened to them at least once day. There is certainly an opening for an all-rock station to take KLOL's place.

I'm hispanic. I love rock and roll. And I listened to Rock 101. 93.7 and 107.5. I don't really like the buzz. But I loved Rock 101. Mandatory metallica people. Rush, Ac/dc, Zeppelin, sabbath, nirvana, stevie ray vauhgn, megadeth, hendrix, floyd. This is a nighmare, I hope it is. Just think if Clear Channel bought out NASA
wich is another one of Houstons decades old institutions, they could probably sellout again to a latino radio station and replace NASA's rocket logo with a big taco because what we really care about is money, and we dont really care about preserving our heritage. just Remember everybody there is a certain Chevy Dealership that rhymes with LAND SHARK that to advertise with sellouts.

What are this cooporate bastards looking for? Were they afraid of how liberal and expressive these DJ'S (RADIO PERSONALITIES) really are! We as citizens have the right to pick and choose what radio stations we want to listen to and if we propgrammed KLOL in our cars it's for the reason that we liked what we heard! I'm latino but don't like that crappy bullshit music that's taken it's place. Therefore, I would like and demand answers and plaination as to why KLOL was taken off the air. IT should be want the people want not what those Idiots corporate bastards think "will work"!

Clear Channel's management is obviously made up of morons! How can they ignore the THOUSANDS of KLOL fans who need to hear pure rock music every day? And what's happened to the DJs and personalities we all came to know & love? It just makes me sick - the best way to hurt CC is to boycott their advertisers. Money is the only language they understand - certainly it's not loyalty!

Even if you don't like Walton and Johnson, what about all the rock from the last 30 years? Was there no frequency to use? You had to take one of the oldest radio institutions in H-town in flush it. Thanks for nothing. Way to make us all hate corporate radio even more. You are all the reason XM and ipods are taking over. I hope you are all happy with what you are doing to radio. Then, call the Chris Baker show (2:00pm - 6:00pm) on 740am (clear channel station) and discussing your issues.

They may not let you in, but if enough people call in to complain, you can tie up the lines for any other topic they wish to talk about.

Just so you know, Hispanics are the majority in Houston, not the minority.

I believe this is a marketing ploy similar to Coke. Soon, we will have "Classic" Rock101 and everyone will want to listen to it...

Posted by: Mark on November 14, 2004 10:39 PM

if you are missing your Walton and Johnson, might I suggest switching to 650AM - Howard Stern - where W&J got all their material

You so have it backwards son.

Posted by: Jeremy on November 15, 2004 12:07 AM

I had an 80 mile commute (one way) into Houston every day for two years when W&J started on 101. They saved my mornings from the garbage spewed by Dan and Reg (missp on purpose) along with their endless stream of commercials and that pop crap on the other stations. Now we only get Sweet Home Alabama on 93.7 six times a day, bubble gum on 107.5, and 106.9: all REO Speedwagon all the time! Good thing Baker is still on the air. S&P were good in their day. There is simply no good radio in Houston.

WHAT HAPPENED? Are you all nuts..I can't make the day without my morning guys W & J. BRING THEM BACK!!!!!!!!!! Not fair. We have enough stations that play Tejano music...I don't need to hear another..We want our REAL 101 back!!!!!!!!NOW !!!

Posted by: Robin on November 15, 2004 7:31 AM

Ok folks..W&J did suck...they were no where near being Radio Gods as Stevens & Pruett with Boner. Let's no forget about Tubby who is on 97.1 now. This does suck, I have listened to KLOL for 30 years now...I grew with it like most Houstonians, it was passed on from brother to sister and on down the family chain. In my opion KLOL had the best lineup at one time..S&P with Boner, Wendy, OD then Fixx. LOng live KLOL

Go to petitiononline.com and click on the two KLOL petitions and sign them. May or may not help.

The Stern comparisons are a waste of time. It's like Chevy/Ford. If you like one better, good for you. W&J didn't get all their material from Howard. Com'on, thats absurd. I like W&J because they are from where I'm from, Texas and Louisiana, and they talk about our area. You will never hear Howard talk about the Saints, or bar-be-cue places, or the Astros, or New Orleans politicians, or all the local news going on. Howard has a funny show, but it's just different from W&J, not better or worse.

I'm afraid KLOL is gone forever, like when they changed KIKK from country to whatever it is now, what, some jazz-Kenny G stuff? I remember listening to it when I was a wee lad. Even though I didnt care for the music, when they changed it, I thought it was sad and pitiful. Just like all the bubbas and bubbettes who got pissed, well, now it's our turn.

At fmqb.com, it said Wendy Miller will do middays on the Buzz now, and Steve Fixx afternoons on KKRW the Arrow.

Ask Dan Patrick and those KSEV AM-700 guys what they think of CC. When CC took over 950 KPRC, they booted all of them out too. He was able to buy 700 though, so they live on, and are doing quite well for an independent station. They get to choose the programming, not some over-bloated evil corporation which only cares about the dollar bill.

Same thing happened in San Jose, they changed a great rock station to Mexican music, so dont feel like the Lone Ranger here.

I woke up at 5:30 this morning, stared at my radio, which I always turn on to hear Stevie Ray doing "Little Wing", to have a little enjoyment to begin my workday week, to hear Johnsons smooth voice, to kick-start my day, to get a good feeling that there is at least two guys that "get it", to get a laugh, to hear about the idiot Hollywood types, to hear the Saints lost again, to get a Britney Spears update for a joke, but she is hot, and W-J helped carry me through my morning in a comforting way. I always knew they were going to say something I wanted to hear. I feel like I've lost two friends, like they moved away and left no new address or telephone number.

I stared for a minute, scratched my belly, then sat in silence and had a cup of joe. Didnt even turn the radio on this morning.

That sucks.

Posted by: nincompoop on November 15, 2004 8:08 AM

I am having withdrawls from W&J. What am I supposed to do, listen to 104 KRBE in the morning? Or am 700? If I listen to any of the other stations, I'm just sending my business to another Clear Channel station. It is a sad time for radio!

Posted by: Heather on November 15, 2004 8:08 AM

I am truly saddened to hear of the loss of a true Houston audio landmark. I have listed to this station almost daily for many years. I came to the Houston area is 1967, and like many, many others felt that this was a wonderful, colorful, local musical icon. A great mistake was made by a faceless corporation.

Posted by: Mike Hodges on November 15, 2004 8:12 AM

Myself and many others are very upset about the loss of Walton and Johnson and the rest of the Rock 101 D.J.'s.. I have been listening to rock 101 since I was a kid.. I am not 22 years old.. I listen to W & J from the time i wake up to the time they say, "Bye, bye Billy Ed." Then as the day progressed, my desk radio would play KLOL until 6:00 p.m. when i was getting off work.. Then i usually listened to it on my way home or a c.d.. Not only was I a true 10%er to W & j, but also to KLOL itself.. Right now I am listening to the arrow, its ok, but i would rather be listening to W & J for my morning antics.. Thanks for ruining my mornings and my work days..

Posted by: Christopher Brown on November 15, 2004 8:21 AM

I too am in total shock. I was a die-hard 10%er, and have gotten all my kids, brother, sister, boss, and friends to laugh with the antics in the morning. I knew I could make it through another day if I could laught with W & J in the morning, and my drive home and evening were always better with a VARIETY of rock music to listen to, not toned down or played out over and over again!! What the hell is CC thinking? We now have 6 latino radio stations, not to mention a newly formated newspaper (with spanish advertising, and sports pages in spanish), announcements at the Wal-Mart are even in spanish. When will it end!!!!
I will email the corporate idiots at CC, and sign every petition I can get my hands on. I am all for boycotting the CC advertisors and other stations (which really aren't worth a crap anyway. Time to spend some money on CD's, I won't go the XM route and put more money into CC's pockets. If someone would like some help organizing a demonstration - feel free to email me for LOTS of help. Also, where can we get a list of all of the companies spending money to advertise on CC?

This new channel is an embarrasment to everyone that is from Houston. I do not understand why everything American is bad... I think that this is also an embarrasment to the Hispanics... Once again the establishment is trying to divide us....

Posted by: Matt on November 15, 2004 9:23 AM

Rock 101 KLOL was always my station as soon as they went on the air in 1970. When I bought a car it was always my preset button 1. It is a dirty rotten shame that Clear Channel Communications is in the position of being able to turn their backs on a very devout and loyal bunch of employees and listeners......

Posted by: Steve on November 15, 2004 9:34 AM

Like we don't already have enough Latino crap on our radio band!! Where's the great American rock? Where's my Mandatory Metallica??!? Who came up with this brilliant idea?

Posted by: Snow on November 15, 2004 9:45 AM

SHOCK, DEPRESSION AND PURE DISGUST ...........that's how I feel about losing 101. 101 was staple for many of us long term listeners. I was bred, born and raised in Houston, Texas some 48 years ago. No other station compared. I know I'm going to get slammed for this but I wonder if I move to a Latino country, will THEY change their format for me? Doubtful. I'm beginning to feel like a third class citizen. Clear Channel... DON'T EVEN think about mailing me any advertisements about your new format - especially in a language that is FOREIGN to me. I waste enough time trying to find ENGLISH on labels and papers as it is. Last time I checked, I still lived in the gool ol' U S OF A. Time for me to turn off the radio completely. It's a sad day indeed. Wonder what Ozzie would think?

Posted by: Lisa on November 15, 2004 9:50 AM

What the HELL is the problem? Aren't there ENOUGH LATINO stations on the air, you guys had to drop one of the best formats in Houston... Where do we go now for the real stuff? Who the hell made this decision? Obviously it was far from informed. There are listeners who jam only to 101 KLOL for the rock, and the old stuff, because it was real! This format SUCKS!

Posted by: Leigh on November 15, 2004 10:06 AM

Maybe the buzz but they don't play any old stuff and they just started playing Metallica now that KLOL is off the air THIS SUX we miss you KLOL

Posted by: Eric on November 15, 2004 10:28 AM

It's absolutely ridiculous that KLOL switched formats to become a Spanglish Station. But...

A few things. KLOL's morning show sucked, plain and simple. A couple rednecks trying to be funny, but failing.

As a business person who buys radio, I've known for a long time that KLOL's ratings were bad. Buzzfest sells out, or comes close consistently. When 101 tried to do their own version, they had maybe 4k attendees at the woodlands. The station has been in trouble for years. That said, they didn't need to switch to Spanglish. Hire a new music director, switch things up a bit, and improve ratings w/o a drastic format change. One thing they had going for them was that they reach a primarily over 21 audience, which is great for many advertisers, especially alchohol. The station could have been saved, w/the right Music Director, and tweaking.

As much as everyone's mad at Clear Channel, the only place to hear Rock is on 94.5, 93.7, or 96.5 (rarely)....make that switch to Satellite radio as soon as you can!

Posted by: Eric on November 15, 2004 10:34 AM

KLOL is total crap but it's (was) one of the better pieces of crap on the radio here. I still can't believe that here in the 4th largest city in Amerika we have such lame radio.

Posted by: KYLE on November 15, 2004 10:59 AM

Remember Folks...It all boils down to money! After some research this morning I find that Houston has not 6 but 16!! Hispanic radio stations and they have more combined income from advertisers than any other format. Apparently that is the demographics spending money in Houston??? It is time to boycott those advertisers! We know that Rock KLOL may not have had the largest pull/audience, but you would think that in the 4th largest city there would be room for several different styles of radio programs so everyone could be happy. This could work if one company (Clear Channel) didn't own them all. In other large cities like Chicago you find hundred of stations that cater to several small-medium niches. This variety wasn't just about the mighty dollar but offering something to everyone in the city that keeps them in the money. Lets not give up the fight to bring back music and Walton & Johnson for us 10%'s!!!

Posted by: Dawn on November 15, 2004 11:21 AM

Not a goddamn thing, that's what. W&J were not homophobic, I'm a lesbian, and they were my favorite morning show. I loved Billy Ed, he cracked me up.
I'm not old either, I'm 23, 101 was listened to by like every demographic there is, even my dad, and my little sister listen to it. What the f**k...Everyone I've talked to is pissed about this. We do not need any more crap latino stations. Even if Hispanics are the majority in this city, a fact which I find questionable, there is no call for this, there's already like a hundred and twenty-seven spanish stations. I hate everybody right now. Man, I want to kick somebody in the freakin face.

For all of those who want to get back at Clear Channel by switching to XM, please do your research. Clear Channel is a major investor in XM. Sirius is backed by Ford and Daimler Chyrsler, BTW.

This is an outrage! I couldn't believe my ears when I woke up this morning. I spent probably 10 minutes adjusting the dial on my clock radio trying to tune in Walton & Johnson before I accepted what had happened. Fourteen Latino stations weren't enough? Where is the logic in destroying the only bastion of comprehensive rock music in this great city? Rock 101 has been a staple of the Houston airwaves with a proud 34 year tradition. I've grown up listening to 101. Nearly every new rock song I've heard on the radio has come from that station. There is a sudden and unexpected void in my life now that is comparable to the death of a loved one. Where now will I turn for my music? There is nowhere that can compare. Meanwhile Latinos now have fifteen choices instead of fourteen. This is clearly a racist move. I have nothing against Latinos, and my anger is not directed towards them. If Clear Channel wanted to try to get a bigger piece of the pie of Hispanic listeners, why would it dismantle the only station in the city like Rock 101, forsaking it's many listeners and employees. They could have destroyed any number of lesser stations to accoplish this. No this is, without a doubt, a response by the liberal media (Clear Channel being a member) to the increase in the conservative Hispanic vote. Squelching conservative voices like Walton & Johnson is a cheap ploy to accomplish that end and it will not work. The way this was done, without warning, lacks any semblance of class. Shame on Clear channel.

Posted by: Steve Sparkman on November 15, 2004 3:46 PM

Their format was like a confortable chair, maybe a little ratty looking but part of the house anyway. Clear Channel will never bring them back. I imagin they will reflect when executives at CC are replaced with automated executives or offshore concepts. After 25 years of listening I have outgrown the content but not the FREEDOM to say what they did as local Houstonians. I guess the content for the new program will come from mexico after all it is cheaper that way.

Posted by: Alex on November 15, 2004 3:48 PM

I agree with all of you except Latina. Surprise, suprise... sombody calling herself "Latina" has no problem with the change. She obviously has a larger bank account than most hard workong Houstonians who can't fit satalite radio into there budget or as she suggests: buying all the CDs from all the various artist who we heard on 101. I hate that crappy music Hispanics listen to and now I hate Clear Channel. If I decide to spring for satalite, you can rest assured it will NOT be XM.

Posted by: Accordion_Smasher on November 15, 2004 3:59 PM

KLOL was the longest running runnning rock station in History. I am unbelievably pissed the F&%$ off that the a$$holes at CC, changed the format to tejano.
I am not a racist and I have latino friends, but there are enough latino, tejano, chicano, or whatever stations in houston and there are not enough rock stations. Hell they all play the same music anyway.
Did everyone know that the a$$hole cc executive who made the decision to change the format was a latino. Coincidence? If the tables were turned and if it had been a white guy who changed to a rock station from a latino station, he would be called a racist.
Everyone loved rock 101, white, black, hispanic, chinese, indian, and I am sure that there are some hispanics that were pissed off about the change too.
I hate this I really do. I feel so sorry for Dave, Wendy, Locke, Nasty, Fix, walton, johnson and all the other great personalities who made our days a little better with good humored fun, and ball bustin rock.
If any of you out there plan a riot, or a rally to take back the rock, let me know, I will be there with bells on.

I was SO HAPPY to hear Wendy Miller's voice on the radio this morning - she's now on 94.5 The Buzz from 10 am to 3 pm! Apparently 94.5 is changing their play list a bit to include some of the KLOL stuff. I listened today and it wasn't too bad. Wendy said they're also going to do Mandatory Metallica on week nights! But I really miss Outlaw Dave and Loch - any word on what they're doing now?

Bring Rock 101.1 Back! Screw the latino crap.

Posted by: Angi on November 15, 2004 4:09 PM

The Houston area has 16 different Latino stations, if Clear Channel wanted to create another one, fine, but they had no reason to eliminate a rock and roll icon from the air ways. KLOL had a large and loyal fan base and was evidently doing well finacially (thats all the bean counters at Clear Channel care about anyway). Any way you look at it this shows contempt for our city and our demographic so we (KLOL listeners) should hit them where it hurts by complaining to or boycotting the sponsors of CLEAR Channel stations in the Houston area

Posted by: Kent on November 15, 2004 4:10 PM

I am amazed at how stupid a company can be. I work in the industry in Houston and have grown up on the solid Rock of Houston formerly known as KLOL. I was amazed when they fired Pruett, Grego and the Boner. But remember when they did that they were real shady, they just took them off the air just like they did our rock-n-roll. Now dont get me wrong, I hated the new morning show with a passion, they were really a bunch of self rightous idiots, but I loved that station and think that Clear Channel upper management needs to step in and see how much the middle management guys screwed up this time... By the way, middle management is who got rid of the old morning show and almost got sued so they hired them back in Dallas and then screwed them again by pulling the plug on the format they were on there.

What screwed the people of Houston out of good radio was the FCC allowing these huge companys to own multiple stations in one demographic, now they have a monopoly on the market and 'We' the people, eventhough we own the air waves cant do anything about it!

Listen everybody! I'm sorry for those who feel abandoned with the absence of Rock 101. I appreciate 80s metal, but that station was in the tank when they started to play Creed and Alice In Chains. They might as well have added Matchbox 20.....never mind that is reserved for Mix 96.5 Anyway I am glad that Mega 101 has taken over. Orbita 100.7 was a recent casualty at the expense of Univision Radio and now Mega 101 took over at the best possible time. Like I said earlier, I am sorry for the Rock 101 fans, but don't make borderline racist comments to defend the situation. I am Cuban not Mexican or Central American, so I appreciate a fresh station that plays Caribbean-influenced hip-hop, salsa remixes and Spanish club music without the Spanish love songs, Tejano, Norteño, bachata and 80s style Spanish rock. Yes there are a half dozen Spanish language F. M. stations, but they each serve different segments of the Hispanic community. Did African-Americans have to settle for Majic and the Boxx - no, that's why Power 97.5 and Party 104.9 emerged. So, once again, I hope another station emerges to absorb the loss of Rock 101, but don't blame the Latino MAJORITY for the loss! Salsa and Spanish Hip-Hop does not equal Tejano/Norteño/Cumbia.....all Latinos do not share the same musical tastes, just like all Anglos, African-Americans and Asians don't!!!!!

Posted by: D. J. Triple G. on November 15, 2004 4:17 PM

I moved to Houston 15 yrs ago and 101 was like a new friend. It was a good rock station and played some fine rock tunes most of the time. The morning show was never good after Stevens and Pruitt but i was always thinking they could do much better for a replacment. So its the old 18-34 demo they want. They also remind me of people who love waylon jennings and jethro tull and are truly of the stoner age and need to be laid to rest. I dont agree with the format as I really miss the old 107.5 krqt the rocket. but hey good things never last.

For the last time.....the new format is not Tejano. I don't listen to Tejano, part of which I like this new station. Nothing against Tejano, but it's not my music. I now hope another station emerges so I can avoid reading the hypocrisy, racism and stereotypical comments. I listen to all formats, I wish I could go see Metallica tomorrow, but I'm also glad to hear Celia Cruz and El Gran Combo during the week instead of just on Friday and Saturday nights. By the way they are Salsa not Tejano!
Here is a chart - please follow along:
93.3 Norteño (Univision Radio)
102.9 Tejano (Univision Radio)
104.9 Black and some Hispanic Hip-Hop (Univision Radio)
106.5 Spanish Love songs with some Pop and Rock (Univision Radio)

I just have one simple quote.

"Rock 'an roll aint noise pollution... rock and roll aint gonna die..."

All you loyal listeners, this is our time. This is our time to stand up and fight for what we want and what we believe. If you wanna stand up to CC find their studio, get some poster boards, something to hold those signs up high and dont stop. Encourage your friends to do so. EVERYONE needs to get in on this, this isn't just some stupid rock station they flipped over, this is us, this will always be us, this will never change. Not one of us who has listend to KLOL will ever forget the joy that this radio station has given us. They aren't just DJ's, they're our family. They're the ones that make our trips home bearable, what make our parties.. parties. So I say to you Houstonians. Fight them. Fight them hard, fight them long, fight them till they cant fight no more. Keep up the fight, for if you don't you're letting them win. Don't buy a damn thing they try to sell you, don't buy XM radio, email Clear Chanel, call clear channel, tell your friends, tell them to tell theirs. We CAN fight this we WILL fight this and I don't care if I'm the only one out there, I will personally protest this alone if I have to. I will find out where the studio is and post my cell phone number later if you want to get ahold of me and come on over. Keep up the fight guys, it might do some good. But if it doesn't, at least we're trying.

I find it ironic that last "Steve" guy exposes his own ignorance by making sweeping generalizations and overtly racist stereotypes about all rock listeners. Why is it okay for non-white people to express intolerance of others. I've listened to 101 my whole life and I don't fit a single one of your descriptions of rock listeners. We are not the haters, but you are.

god damn what the hell is this. I had no idea of a change until friday and i thought my radio was broken or something. I mean mandatory metallica, 420 rock block, zeppelin, and all that. The Kurt Cobain memorial. WHat the hell is CC thinking? There is no more good stations in houston except for 93.7 or so. This also will bring down CC's ratings considering there are enuf latino shit around without killing a great rock station.

Posted by: Hey Joe on November 15, 2004 5:15 PM

What several of you are saying about contacting Clear Channel is a reat idea. I was just at the corporate website (http://www.clearchannel.com) and noted they had email address for general and the radio P.R. Dude (Omar Thompson omarthompson@clearchannel.com). I was going to call him in the morning, but decided against using his direct line. Think I'll use the corporate H.Q. direct line there in San Antonio (210-822-2828)I will assume that the new Klol does not have it's sponsors lined up yet, or else they are just waiting on the furor to die down (10,000 songs??? Give me a break!!!) Over 5,000 of you have signed the local petition electronically, if you are over 18 years of age, please take a few minutes to contact (call would be best Clear Channel Corporate tomorrow. They have already discarded us as listeners and could care less about how we 5,000 feel. Hopefully 5,000 phone calls over the next few days will let them know. By the way, the other Clear Channel FM stations in this market are KHMX 96.5, KKRW 93.7, KODA 99.1, KTBZ 94.5, I just removed all of them from my radio presets, and will definately tuning into the new Klol in a few weeks to find out who the new sponsors are so i can call them with my opinions on what stations they sponsor as well.
Good luck to our friends Walton, Johnson, Outlaw Dave, & Wendy, we'll miss you. LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL!!!!!!!! 'Stingray'

Posted by: DAVID J on November 15, 2004 7:48 PM

Does it seem funny to anyone else that Clear Channel is based in San Antonio and they keep changing formats to mexican music? What a drag. I just turned 40 and I remember 101 from the times of hanging out with my big sister. Been a loyal listener ever since I can remember. If there is something we can do, than we really should be doing it. Their taking over the air waves and it sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! E.H.

Posted by: Eddie on November 15, 2004 7:49 PM

Got news for you W&J got their start from S&P. So what if they were Republican. They were better morning show than the laughing goof-balls on the buzz or any other station. People like JAYE need to wake up and take their heads out from between their legs; she is the kind of person that makes Houston traffic suck also! Kind of hard to see with your head up there, especially while driving. All thats left now is bubble-gum on the rest of the stations.

Posted by: Randy on November 15, 2004 8:30 PM

I am a 21 year old college student. i learned to drive while listening to 101. i worked out in football to 101. i bonded with my dad to 101. if there is anything i can do to get 101 back on the air, i will be there. good music was hard to find in houston to begin with. i only wish the people who made this decision had the balls to step up and not sneak around and take it from us in the middle of the night. f-ing pussys

I'll be 43 years old in 2 days. Rock 101 was the number 1 preset on all my radios. I've listen to it for at least 22 years, long before I even moved to Houston. It may not have always been the best, but it was always there to turn too when you needed it. I agree the suits at Clear Channel are idiots and have no idea what they're doing. I'll be finding all the petition web sites I can and signing in.

You see? That's why schools teach you how to not on;y speak english, but to also type it. Had you spent more time learning instead of getting 14 year old girls pregnant with your welfare babies, you might have not sounded like an idiot.

BTW, I AM Hispanic, so don't call me a fucking racist.

I can't believe that 101 klol has been turned into a tejano station. That was the only rock station I have ever listened to. 27 Years. I guess it's all cd's and satellite radio now. You Clear Channel morons need to change it back. You don't realise how many people you have royally pissed off. FIX IT!!!

Posted by: cosmo on November 15, 2004 11:59 PM

I listened to 101 as much for the music as the little breaks were the dj's spoke. Does SR have dj's? If not, it's automated, and that seems quite static. If I wanted no dj's, I listen to a cd.

"Dear Mark M.

Oh look......pathetic racial slurs. How original. Oh wait....being a beaner is cool. Why? Because you speak like an uneducated Mexican. And?

Posted by: Mark M. on November 16, 2004 12:04 AM

Brilliant move CC...when I think of good music I think of one thing - tejano. Nothing like taking out the driving guitar riffs and bringing in more accordian. Somehow I think that bands like Metallica, AIC, and Led Zep will mean more to music than Ricky Martin and Los del Rio (Macarena). It is not that I disagree with market demands, just why 101...why not something else that has yet to establish itself. A sad day for us all.

Posted by: Chris S on November 16, 2004 1:35 AM

I just read that comment, "I am a hispanic so don't call me a racist.."

That is so ignorant...hispanics cannot be racist?

Posted by: Chris S on November 16, 2004 1:38 AM

Yes, they can. But speaking about ones own ethnic group because of how another member of the same said group looks like an idiot IS NOT being a racist.

I thought that would be how it was taken. Sorry for the confusion.

Posted by: Mark M. on November 16, 2004 2:13 AM

I cannot beleive they took off Walton and Johnson to replace them with some mexican station. 101 klol rocked the houston area, and now it is gonna be a low rated station now. We need klol back.

THE ADDRESS IS 2000 WEST LOOP SOUTH, HOUSTON, TX. BRING SIGNS, T-SHIRTS, AND MOST OF ALL AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2004 FROM 3:00PM TIL WE GET OUR POINT ACROSS.

LET THE MEDIA KNOW ABOUT IT. WE WANT COVERAGE. IF ANYONE HAS SPONSORS THAT COULD HELP OUT WITH FOOD AND DRINKS THAT WOULD BE GREAT TOO. EXCELLENT EXPOSURE FOR THEM AS WELL.

Posted by: Bob F. on November 16, 2004 8:35 AM

Direct quotations from earlier posts:

THE PEOPLE WHO OR PERSON WHOM INITIATED IT MUST BE LATINO OR FUCKING 'MEXICAN'....WHO EVER....FUCK YOU......
There is enough mexicans and as well mexican stations in this town we beat Santa Anna and we can beat them again.....
Hell they all play the same music anyway.....
We do not need any more crap latino stations.....
Put that shit back on AM!!!! Viva my ASS!!!.....
how many people actually listen to that Latino crap anyway?.....

I agree one has freedom of speech to post these comments, but that does not excuse the blatant racism of it. This is a forum to vent dissapointment at the loss of Rock 101, not to dump on the Hispanic population, of which Mexicans are but one ingredient. I'm Cuban and we are a minority among Houston Hispanics, but Colombians and Guatemalans are two common nationalities in Houston, and they generally appreciate Salsa-Merengue and don't appreciate Tejano-Norteño too often. That's not even accounting for Panamanians, Nicaraguans, Hondurans, Venezuelans and other nationalities which help make this city diverse.
So maybe some of you will realize that not all Hispanics/Latinos are Mexicans. Mexicans have a rich and historic heritage, but they're not the only Spanish-speaking members of the greater Houston area!

There is a Pakistani station on AM 1560 which I believe deserves an FM station with their significant population and awesome music. The Vietnamese deserve one too.
90.1 K.P.F.T. leads the way with respect to inclusive music formats.

So feel free to share your dissatisfaction with Clear Channel Communications or even the new Mega 101 itself, but do not use the Hispanic/Latino population as the scapegoat.....blame the mediocrity of Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam for sagging ratings.

Wendy Miller is a sell out. Yea we all need to look out for A#1,but come on Wendy. Just two months ago before lunch time she was saying how she is living the Rosk-n-roll dream by working for KLOL. Saying that she grew up listening to KLOL and knowing that she would love to work for the station some day. Now she's candy coating the fact that she's at the BUZZ. Wendy you are a smart woman, you could have done alot better. And FIXX going to the ARROW. Come on you damn SELL OUTS...

As someone else pointed out. . another rock station will come to Houston. . just be patient. Also, more than likely it will completely outdo what KLOL did. . . just hang on people, but don’t fool yourself in thinking that you can bring back KLOL. . you will not succeed!!!

Posted by: Chuntaro on November 16, 2004 11:57 AM

Luckly, my car has XM, in-dash CD and a 12 disk CD changer. 101 played great music but I have to admit that their morning show sucked. My kids liked the music, but were not allowed to listen to the station on their way to school in the mornings. 94.5's morning show is much better, and they actually play some music as well.

When I first realized that this thing had changed to a foreign language station, I thought my radio was broken and receiving a broadcast from the twilight zone or something. Maybe one of the perferred mexican channels will someday change to German or Japanese or something else that they can't understand and see how they feel about that. This program on my radio will be perminantly changed no matter what the bozo's that did this think just out of dis-respect for their employees, listeners and the general population that enjoys the language we call "national".

Well, I'm not surprised. KLOL has sucked for years. I abandoned radio when the only real rock station - ZROCK 106.9 went off the air. Clear Channel is run by hispanics, so they could care less. You got what they listen to and they own the airwaves.Get smart. Make MP3's of all your favorite tunes and burn them to CD, get a decent MP3 player, put the CD in and set it to random play. Superior "radio", no talk, no ads. Also, how about we get together and put up a network of low power radio stations on the same freq. and linked with one feed? Won't cost much and commercial radio can't compete.

Posted by: Don DIckerson on November 16, 2004 6:44 PM

Sad but true. And, it royally sucks!! I want the Outlaw back!! I can listen to Wendy on 94.5 but I don't really care for the station.
I say we all protest at the studio. Picket signs in hand & DARE them to cross the line! Just like the union strikers do!!!! I will be bugging the shit out of clear channel. How dare they!!!!!!

If you are pissed about this decision by CC and decide to go satellite, please buy SIRIUS. XM satellite is the bastard child of CC, stay away from it. Tell car dealers you won't buy thier car if they have XM satellite installed. Insist on SIRIUS. Since CC has no soul, hitting them in the pocketbook is the only place where it might hurt them.

TO HELL WITH TEJANO MUSIC

Posted by: jason on November 16, 2004 7:05 PM

someone plz post cc's website or email addy so we can overwelm them with emails regarding this delicate situation......god damn bastards

Posted by: JASON on November 16, 2004 7:07 PM

If we bring any station back, bring ZROCK back! Real metal, no censorship (honestly, when did you last hear Pantera's Fucking Hostile or Slayer's Payback on KLOL!?) Hell, does anyone here remember the free concerts at Milby Park that were sponsored by the original KLOL? Years later they wimped out...the KLOL that went off the air had given up on rock even before CC bought them, but I think we should hunt down the worthless dirtbags that sold various stations to CC and kick their asses but GOOD! Then take all of CC's station off the air simultaneously.

Any tech types out there that understand the term "phase conjugation" will know what we need.

This is the most idiotic move I've ever heard of.
Why would we need another latino station in Houston, english is already practically a second language here. You people are un-American.
This has to be a joke. It is the worst business decision I have ever heard of and I have seen some stupid ones in my nearly sixty years.
I can see AM radio making a hugh come back. My poor husband has not been to work since Walton and Johnson were taken off the air because he can't drive there without their show. We will soon be bankrupt and starving. I hope you pinko communists are happy!

I just can't believe it!! I moved to Houston 15 years ago and remember Stevens & Pruitt. They were the best. That changed to Pruitt, Boner and Greggo. AND then cc changed it all again. NOW this???? There isn't much left for those of us who like rock music from the then and now. A great mix of music. I'm sorry, why change a good thing? There is a saying " If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Posted by: SAM on November 16, 2004 8:11 PM

I can't believe this happened, I was out of town and when i got in my car this morning I thought something was wrong with my radio. They were playing some kind of spanish rap!!! I'm so pissed, KLOL was the ONLY great rock station in houston. I miss my walton and johnson!!! This really sucks. But I did hear Wendy on 94.5

Posted by: Cathy on November 16, 2004 9:13 PM

I love Walton and Johnson!! It seemed as though they were the last free speech we had on the air waves. What happened? We have sooo many tejano stations its sad. What happened to good old fashioned rock? I have only been a morning listner for about a year and fell in love with Walton and Johnson immediately. I don't understand what happened. Isn't free speech part of the constitution? I feel if you don't want to listen or be a part of free speech than you have the freedom and choice to change the friggin' channel. People have become to politically correct and I think, get over it!! KLOL is an awesome station and I personally don't know what I will do without it. I got married on Saturday, NOv 13th and was really stressed. The only thing I looked forward to was getting up and running my bridal errands listening to the only station that relaxes me and lets me look forward to dealing with all the idiots that the world has reproduced. What is going to happen now? I loved waking up in the morning and getting dressed listening to Walton and Johnson. They made me laugh and made my morning a whole lot better knowing that people were still aloud to speak their mind and it was alright!!! I would rather listen to KLOL anytime of the day than any other station. Please let us have back our Walton and Johnson in the morningand Windy Miller at lunch and Outlaw Dave in the afternoon and Uncle Nasty at night playing Metallica till our troops come home. I don't know what this country has come to but CC sucks the fun out of FREEDOM and FREE SPEECH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I sure hope they hear me and realize I am a devoted fan and listener and my husband as well.
thank you i hope we can bring back KLOL!!
P.S. Thanks for the notice.

I may only be 18 years old, but that makes me a life long listener to KLOL. I was a head banger at mere six months. When my parents divorced, KLOL was possibly the only constant in my life. It has been five days since I turned on the radio and spend fifteen minutes trying to figure out if the cloud cover was screwing up my reception or if hell had truly frozen over. I am still in a state of shock and disbelief over this travesty. Personally, I think violence would solve this problem nicely. A wonderful orgy of violence at Clear Channel headquarters followed by razing it to the ground with the executives still inside. That is just what I would like to do. I am told that I am not a very forgiving person, especially when I feel I have lost a lifelong companion. Farewell KLOL, I hope you come back soon.

And you asses at Clear Channel? Satan has a sleigh ride ready for you in Hell.

well what a concert, everybody who went knew who i was, thats for damn sure. i ran around on the floor, holding my sign up to the stands that said BRING BACK THE REAL 101, jeff bagwell endorsed it. i got at least 5,000 to cheer for me, got a hammett guitar pick too!

Posted by: caleb on November 17, 2004 12:53 AM

well i guess this is a good place to cosider as a petition.... all I know is that Walton and Johnson is the greateast radio program in the world. I now have no reason to wake up before 10am. THEY were the reason I woke up and went to work or school. I'm sure they'll pop up somewhere soon, but in the meantime I seriously am depressed about it all.

Posted by: Tommy on November 17, 2004 4:53 AM

Well, regardless of what anyone thinks of Walton and Johnson (I am a fan by the way), the way Clear Channel Communications has handled this is very poor. Clear Channel Communications have completely lost their mind and feel the real waste is their organization.

94.5 has picked up the slack a bit and have started a mandatory Metallica at 10pm and have started playing some rock that it never has before.

Wish we could put together a F**k Off letter to send to Clear Channel.

Posted by: Doug on November 17, 2004 10:12 AM

Unbeliveable, after thirty years, they just drop R&R!!! Boycott Clear Channel, I for one am going to remove all Clear Channel stations. Tune into 89.7 fm, Alvin Community College. They play good kick-ass rock and roll. If possible, also try to receive 106.1, Big Dog, out of Beaumont. They play hard rock, kinda like the old z-rock. Those Bastards at Clear Channel, do not give in to their total domination of the airwaves. Support kuhf, 88.7 and 90.1 kpft. NO more Clear Channel concerts either!!

Posted by: Eric on November 17, 2004 10:27 AM

aparently clear channels actions speak for them selves. we dont matter to them!!! they took the cowards way out by not announcing their decision, not to mention that is just damned inconsiderate.
I supose that they must not need the support of the former 101.1 listeners well the are never going to get mine!!! i will never listen to a cc radio station again especially 101.1 mexican radion. i hope everyone else does the same. to hell with clear channel!!!!!!!!!

it was a joke, i really didnt mean to be serious with that one, i meant to include that in that post. i apologize. i dont have any disrespect toward any race, i work with hispanics and im hearing from them they wish the real 101 was back and that the new station is stupid. i just wanna shoot myself when they say LATINO & PROUD on the air, makes you wanna go punch him in the teeth.

Posted by: caleb on November 17, 2004 3:25 PM

Hey everyone, if you really want to help get Walton & Johnson back on the air, write or email Cox Radio of Houston and Infinity Radio of Houston and let them know that you would like to see them carry the Walton & Johnson show. Take some action...and boycott Clear Channel radio stations while you're at it!

Posted by: Holly on November 17, 2004 4:13 PM

The truth of the Matter is that hard rock and heavy metal are a dying breed. I am both hispanic and been a rocker all my life and agree with those who are really pissed and dissapointed... But don't take it out on immigration/minorities issues and all that crap that has nothing to do with music. I stopped listening to radio many years ago and listen to it maybe for an hour a month when my CD starts playing the first song over again and don't have any more CDs handy. I would reccomend if you can't live without radio, get satellite radio where there are a billion formats commercial free. I love my music and its not heavy metal, its progressive rock which is not a dying breed, that has been dead for decades. Like the Who and Rainbow would say: Long Live Rock!

Leo

I can not function properly in the morning without my Walton & Johnson. What the hell are the exes thinking? Also, what the hell am I supposed to listen to when most of the other stations are playing crap? My radio rarely ever turned from 101. Do they even care that they have taken away something that is part of Houston and the surronding areas? Lisa

Posted by: Lisa Williams on November 17, 2004 4:57 PM

this is absolute BS in my opinion. I just moved to the houston area a year ago, and listened to 94.5 until I finally found a station that played older rock that I liked. before that when I scanned the radio every other fking station was latino. Now they're taking the one good rock station and turning it into one yet another latino station. I'm sorry but this is America. and English is the national language. we should not be the ones who have to scan through our radio for 15 minutes to hear something that we can understand, let alone enjoy.

What the Hell! KLOL is gone and will be missed. The corporate jerks don't give a darn about what the people want. They are completely motivated by money. They believe this new crap will get them more advertising dollars because of the growing population of hispanics in the Houston area. This growth is due mostly to illegal immigration and our government will do nothing to stop it. This just shows the changing landscape and is a portent of things to come. KLOL was listened to my me and my legal American hispanic friends; it will be no more!

Posted by: larry on November 17, 2004 9:00 PM

This is truly unjust, and I am deeply enraged. As a life-long fan of KLOL and Proud Fightin' Texas Aggie, I am very saddened.

The current founder and CEO of CC is Lowry Mays, Alumni and the namesake of the school of Business at Texas A&M. I hope he may hear the opinion of one Aggie's dismay and a city that feels betrayed.

Posted by: Conundrum on November 17, 2004 9:06 PM

IY YOU REALLY HATED THE W & J SHOW, BUT LOVED THE KLOL MUSIC, JUST PLAY YOUR CD'S OR TAPES AND GET OVER WITH.
OR DONATE SOME MONEY TO PUT A ROCK STATION TOGETHER

Posted by: JRP on November 17, 2004 9:22 PM

I'm hispanic and I do enjoy listening to Tejano music, but this new 101 Latino station is playing a bunch of bullshit music. I do miss Rock 101 KLOL, I have been a life time listener, and am very disappointed in whatc C.C. has done to our Rock Station. I think we need to do what ever we can to bring Rock 101 back to our airwaves. Maybe if we call the new radio station and tell them that they TOTALLY SUCK on an every 5 minute basis they will leave us to our Rock 101 that we all need and want back.

Posted by: antonio cuellar on November 17, 2004 10:39 PM

I am just as mad as the rest of you guys, but, it truly is not the Latinos doing this. I was raised listenig to KLOL and I'm latino. I definately rocked to KLOL, through my childhood, high school, marriage and now my children rocked KLOL too. It was a very bad and stupid business decision on the the part of CC executives. They have no clue as to the extreme betrayal that the truly loyal listeners have received. Yes, the format has changed, but please lets not be ignorant racists. I'm almost positive that there is a lot of Latino Rockers that are Pissed Off, TOO.

Posted by: Melissa on November 17, 2004 10:39 PM

KLOL is or should I say WAS the only real ROCK station in Houston. No other station will play Zeplin, Ozzy, Van Halen, AC/DC and all the other great rock bands which some of like to hear. Clear Channel has deprived the people of Houston. There are many Tejano or Hispanic station, 2 classic rock stations 2 modern rock stations but there was only 1 KLOL. Why did Clear Channel kill a legend? Clear Channel should answer. Boycott Clear Channel.

Posted by: Paul on November 17, 2004 11:11 PM

please someone tell me this a bad dream. i am 37 years old, i have lived in and around houston for more than 27 years. 101.1 klol was always a part of it. even when i lived in other parts of the state, i still kept 101 programed in my radio. so when i came back i only had to change the station with a push of a button. now the only button i want to push is the one that blows that crappy station up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the one where the idoits that made this happen.

Posted by: joey on November 18, 2004 12:12 AM

I am just as upset as everyone else when the format was changed. I do really miss S&P they just made my morning. W&J did become a little tired to me to the point that I was listening to talk radio on am. I just want to clear some things up. The new Latino station is not Mexican Music or station. Just like there is different genres of english music (country, pop, rock,R&B,RAP,and so on) there is different types of spanish music (Mexicans from Mexico do not consider Tejano music to be Mexican and Mexican Texans do not always agree with Music from Mexico) In turn please stop saying it is a Mexican station. 99.99% of the artist on this new station are OTMs (Other Than Mexicans) As a mater of fact more than a few are Americans.

I do no see this station lasting very long anyway. I have yet to see any Spanish FM station last very long. It is all about a quick buck for CC who I think is just trying to capitlize on the Latin Explosion. There really is no station like Latino on FM right now. There was a station some what simular on 100.7 but the format changed to an AM Christian station. You can just imagine how they felt.

Believe me when I say that I am not making excuses. Just don't say it is another Mexican station because it is not Mexican it seems to be catering to OTMs which hold thier noses up to Mexicans.

I hope I do not offend anyone as it is not my intention to.

Posted by: MANDO on November 18, 2004 12:24 AM

If everyone that bitched actually got of your lazy asses and supported KLOL rather than sparking up a new bong load they would still be here! Petitions and protests will mean nothing.. but if it makes you feel better then go ahead. It was a radio station... it was here for a long time.. now it's gone... take a deep breath and get over it. Move on. Clear Channel ownes a chunk of XM.. but little did any of you know.. they also own a chunk of Sirius under a few different names... so go sign up for satellite radio.. it'll make stock holders happy!

Posted by: Funny on November 18, 2004 12:43 AM

Go to http://www.bringbackklol.com. There they will print your comments and signature to Clear Channel headquarters, and you can also buy a Bring Rock 101 back bumper sticker, pin, shirt, and all kinds of other stuff. I don't know if this was posted already, but there are just WAY too many posts to read. And that's a good thing. We need signatures, well the people that started the petition at bring back KLOL that is, needs all the signatures they can get, and the more, well that will show Clear Channel what they got themselves in way over their heads. We will not go quietly, nor without a fight. Rock 101 gave a damn about us, and we give a damn about them. So let's team up, and get our station back...from those morons at Clear Channel.
I am 21, starting listening when we moved here when I was 3. I grew up with this station, and I will never forget the day...Houston rock mattered no more.

Posted by: Michelle on November 18, 2004 12:57 AM

Clear Channel is really out of touch with this and any other educated Hispanic. I am so pissed off at CC that I can't put into words the anger and frustration they created by getting rid of Walton and Johnson. Like them or not, they spoke truth about racism, sexism, prejudice and stereotypes here in Houston.
I almost never agreed with W&J but they told it like it is and voiced the opinions that people would end up in a Human Resources office for if we said those things in the workplace!
Please find your way back into Houston's PATHETIC airwaves!! Is there anyone out there besides Clear Channel??!!
Oh Yeah, FUCK YOU Clear Channel!!!!!

Posted by: Reuben on November 18, 2004 6:54 AM

NO Freaking way!!! Walton and Johnson were with me every single morning on my commute from Houston to College Station - thank God I can still get them in C.S. even though it's only been re-runs - hope they get back on the air soon!

Posted by: Paul on November 18, 2004 8:32 AM

clear channel really F*$KED UP. they removed the only real rock station around. it times i have to drive to ft. hood see friends and family, and in my truck i can rock to klol all the way to temple and at times i can still get them at ft. hood. this is the darkest day for radio. i plan on boycotting all of clear channel stations and events. clear channel could make up a new channel or that over another channel for their crappy new format. GIVE ME MY ROCK KLOL BACK. let us all fight for right to get our station back.

ive been here in houston 25 years, listening to klol. moby was killer, stevens and pruitt had a good following, but these other guys that followed, they definitley sucked, bigtime.clear channel did the right thing. outlaw dave is a wannabe. 93.7 rock on!what houston needs is an independent radio station, that will play the songs the listener wants to hear, not what the program director dictates. what the listener wants to hear is current rock, old rock, and local talent especially in houston, wehave the best local talent anywhere in the usa. one of the best local bands in houston is STRIDE,DISTANT THUNDER,with JAMES RIVERA, MIKE CONDE,BIG LEFT TURN, AZREALS BANE,ETC .ETC NOT TO MENTION ALL OF THE BLUES ARTISTS IN TOWN. independent radio is needed here in houston, to back up local talent ,as well as giving the listener what THEY WANT!!!!!

What can I say? I agree with most of you. However, you can't be a mysoginist, homophobic, racist, radio station without consequences these days. And let's face it that is exactly what Walton & Johnson were. If not, they certainly played the part impeccably.

In the days of Mark Stevens, Jim Pruett, Eddie Sanchez,Laurie Kendrick, Elaine Closure and Chuck Schramek, 101 was an absolute joy to listen to. But, it seems since February of 2000 when Mark Stevens left, the station went further and further downhill. And something like this was inevitable. As a matter of fact, Wendy Miller and Dave Andrews were the only two who were keeping the station alive.

So, we may say we're stunned and shocked. But deep down we knew it was coming. And we have no one to blame but ourselves for ignoring what was clearly the de-evolution of our rock station to the likes of Walton & Johnson

If you read on Clear Channels their website, it caters to hispanics ONLY-and they want spanglish listeners tuning in to their radio stations! They also did away with the Eagle 97.1[in Dallas]now plays tinkerbell lite rock,WOW! If You are a wealthy person PLEASE step forward and fund a radio station that we can all listen to and not have to worry about having undesirable music forcefed. If you notice there is all kinds of ethnicities that listened to ROCK 101 KLOL and have for Mannnnyy yrs. Walton and Johnson were idiots that people liked just because who they were. They made people laugh early in the morning and that gave them something to look forward to in the morning[it also made people feel smarter than W&J were]HEHE. I miss them all at KLOL[everyone there].GOD BLESS ROCK 101-this is AMERICA , FREE ?? This MONOPOLY has happened in Florida,San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, and coming to a MAJOR CITY near you!!!!

Even though 101 was a "landmark" as far as radio stations go,I stopped listening to it years ago when they played the same songs over, and over.
As sadden as it might be to know it is now off the air, I only wish some other station will pick up where KLOL left, only with a little bit more of Purple, Floyd, Yes, Sabbath and a lot of new Progressive bands as Dream Theater, Flower Kings, Cairo, etc. and none of the alternative crap.
Salsa, Tejano, Norteno? Who gives a flying F%$K!

It is a sad day when a company like CC can torpedo the flagship KLOL of rock in texas. I have listened to this station since only god knows when .These pukes sneak in anywhere they find a hole ,but what they are setting up the mexican ppl for is beyond me .
When they can shut down a landmark, icon like KLOL ,,who is next ,,maybe the ppl in texas should boycott all the advertiser,s of CC ,,this should show our dismay at how a company could treat its listener,s.
The ppl in DALLAS and other cities in texas should step up before they have the same thing happen to them.
We hope W&J,OUTLAW DAVE and the entire STAFF the best ,,sorry guy,s

WE HAVE FM RADIOS IN OUR CARS DO THEY? I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE NEW MUSIC IT SHOULD STAY ON AM RADIO WHERE THEY CAN ALL HEAR IT. ROCK N ROCK WILL NEVER DIE IT JUST CHANGES TO ANOTHER STATION, I'LL BE WAITING FOR THE OLD KLOL TO RESURFACE SOON.

But if someone is reading this from Clear Channel.. YA'll SUCK for changing KLOL. I have listened to that station for at least 20 years. I am just going to start buying CDs. NO more radio for me!!! Posted by: Marco on November 18, 2004 10:03 PM

this is the email i just sent clear channel (bastards) I encourage anyone and everyone to do the same.

"Why would you change your target audience who is at least half if not better, of houston from a rock station (101) to a latino station? What demon crawled up your ass to do something like that? You have too many latino/spanish stations as well as other pathetic stations in the houston area to cancle and change and nobody would have noticed! in order to please "48% of latino age 14-26" you deny half of the people age 4-76! I can't complain about the W&J show and sleep at night, because they are pathetic. You should put on a great rock station playing everything from Lynard Skynard to Ozzy like old 101 and try something completely new in the morning....like PLAY FUCKING MUSIC!!! I'm your average, working houstonian who now has two choices: boycot CC including the XM, Radio and the whole lot, as well as family and friends (not far from it right now) OR listen to CC put on a new, better rock station than houston ever had and listen to the first song played - CC Public Apology. Untill then, ypu and your current shitty advertisement can go to hell just like rock 101!"

Posted by: j on November 18, 2004 10:04 PM

I can't believe that they think we have too many rock stations. Not to offend anyone but I believe we have enough hispanic and country stations. I just can't believe 101 is gone.

Posted by: marci on November 18, 2004 10:33 PM

KLOL was once my fav station. The ROCK format was one of the best. Too many Country stations, and today I counted NINE hispanic stations versus only these three (93.7, 94.5, 106.9) that are worth a krap to me now. CC truely stepped on their dicks this time.

What's next..am I going to wake up tomorrow and turn on the news to hear that the San Jacinto Monument is getting a big Sombrero mounted permanently on top???? :(

This city (Houston and surrounding) is changing. The Mexican border is no longer at the state line, it's at the Montgomery County line!!!

Posted by: Rachael Alvarez on November 18, 2004 11:33 PM

Researched a bit and found this out. CCC (Clear Channel Communications) owns these stations in the Houston area:

FM Stations:(Clear Channel Owned)
KKRW 93.7 (The Arrow)
KTBZ 94.5 (The Buzz)
KHMX 96.5 (The Mix)
KODA 99.1 (Sunny 99)
KLOL 101.1 (The New Mega 101)

AM Stations:(Clear Channel Owned)
KTRH 740
KBME 790
KPRC 950
--------
That sux since I mentioned 93.7 and 94.5 in my 1st reply above. I wonder when they'll go LATINO?

I guess it's time to get SATELLITE RADIO! And not XM..it's gonna be SIRIUS!!

Posted by: Drillbit on November 18, 2004 11:40 PM

just to make it clear, this omega station really sucks, and most of the music they play is not even mexican, its mostly puerto rican "reageton" crap. I'm a from mexico, but i also am a metalhead, I just hope someone does something about this, they screw us up bad, it seems like they want to control us, this suck.

Posted by: david on November 19, 2004 12:04 AM

Come on like we need another hispanic station theres already two hispanic stations to every one english station on the radio, enough is enough. isn't there another frequency they could use for there latino. I for one am boycotting radio alltogether until they bring KLOL back who is with me.....

I've never been a huge rock music fan. I listened to rock 101 for the DJ's they are great. Especially Walton & Johnson. They give a voice to the hard working Americans that are fed up with the bulls&$t we have to put up with. I'm so angry I will never listen to another clear channel station again. In fact I only listen to CD's in my vehicle now. No more radio for me they were the last station in Houston that did not suck.

Clear Channel just ripped out a part of me that the other rock stations in H town cannot measure up to. PUT KLOL BACK ON THE AIR!

After living In and out of the Houston area for the last 34 years. Growing up in Bellaire and remembering KLOL in it's infancy. My husband and I were traveling in from out of town last Friday night and the first thing I do coming in to range is to look for KLOL. What do I find but Tejano Music. I knew immediately what clear channel had done. We had to Move to the DFW area a year ago and Clear Channel did the same thing to the Eagle but instead of Tejano we now get Easy Listening. I and my family mourn the loss of KLOL and think it is sad that we are all being fed redundant crap by Clear Channel. I thnink all Texans need to protest this "shit" being fed to them. Soon we will have nothing to listen to.

I WANT MY KLOL !!!!!!!!!

Has anyone heard where Outlaw Dave is? I know where to find Wendy Miller and Steve Fix, but not Dave and Locke. By the way, I don't think that Wendy sold out. If you noticed, the Buzz and Arrow are CC owned. I am sure an offer of employment was made, or you are out of a job. That is the way of "monopolies". Sucks. I really miss the true KLOL.

Posted by: SAM on November 19, 2004 2:23 PM

Listened to it since I was young. Walton and Johnson were morons but amusing if I was in the right mood..don't like the option taken away.
CC will not bring it back either. It's the Walmart syndrome...i'll just turn old and listen to KTRH news and traffic from now on.
Peace.

I HATE THIS!
They backstabbed S&P (and the Boner too), took a while but W&J grew on me. Really enjoyed their show. They poked fun at everyone, especially themselves.
I've noticed that most of the W&J haters are Hanoi John Fans..(now there's your REAL Losers).
Hoping W&J find a Houston station soon, the other morning talk shows suck worse than the Beaner Rap on KLOL.

I'm a fan of REAL Mexican & Latin music as my collection of cassettes, CD's, and .mp3's will testify.
Anybody out there remember Pedro Infante, Miguel Aceves Mejia, Jose Negrete, Lola Beltran, Trio Los Panchos, and Olga Breskin? (Olga can't really sing, but she doesn't have to!)

Good luck running the dial, it really sucks out there...

Posted by: DirtyDon on November 19, 2004 5:14 PM

This is so fucked up. I am 100% latino/ mexican whatever. Well I loved Walton and Johnson in the morning. I was a faithful listener and I am pissed that they changed it to a latino station. I agree that there is enough latino stations. I want my Walton and Johnson!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: abby on November 19, 2004 5:48 PM

I've watched these posts over two weeks now, wondering what the tide of response would bring. I myself have listened to KLOL daily for over 30 years. Perhaps I am a dinosaur. But, for any marketing CC types monitoring the backlash, I'm 42, make over $100K per year, and have plenty of peer business acquaintainces and friends who had KLOL programmed into the car dial.

Radio is business. Offer a product (programming) to entice an audience. Sell advertising time (revenue) to promote to the audience. What demographic are you shooting for, CC? I'd love to see an article in the Chronicle explaining that the post-Baby Boomer generation is a less appealing financial demographic than the potential Latino audience for Mega 101. I run a company with 80+ employees, the majority Hispanic, from Mexico, to Central America to South America. I understand the racial differences better than most Americans, there's prejudice among many different levels of Hispanics, based on country of origin. But several of my Hispanic employees have 101 decals on their vehicles. On Friday nights after work, they congregate in the parking lot to socialize before going home, and I hear 101 just as much as any of the Latino stations. They have a place in their taste for American rock. And there is (was) no better rock than KLOL.

I appreciate a past post about the internal ethnic differences in Latino music, just as there are divisions in rock, progressive, etc. One genre, but different tastes. As far as morning talk, hey, if you didn't like Walton and Johnson, you didn't get Walton and Johnson. That's the biggest hole in my entertainment universe right now. Their whole rant on their listeners being "10 percenters" was right on target. Only 10 percent of the listening public understood the whole tongue-in-cheek satire they presented. I loved one previous post about the redneck DJ. Who here doesn't get that 5 of those voice personalities were done by one person? And talking to each other back and forth? What talent! He's got to be a controlled schizophrenic.

We've lost an institution, and as much as I am a successful businessman and appreciate change, I see this as a mistake of the first order. The way it was done, the stab at the heart of a long-standing brand. Clear Channel, take my advice, you should have taken down the watered-down 93.7, no identity, no history, weak Dean and Rog, vs. the standard of the call letters of KLOL, Walton and Johnson, Wendy, Outlaw Dave, etc. Tell me who, that grew up with KLOL, will ever get out of their mind the deep-voiced overdub at each break (who was this guy?) "Rock 101 (pause) - K (pause) L-O-L (pause) Houston's Rock Station." Hell, it gives me goosebumps just typing it. I can hear it in my head. I've heard it in my head for 30 freakin' years. Now that's what we used to call "brand identity." Strong stuff, hard to create, hard to keep. Worth a hell of a lot.

Mark my words, CC, not a good idea. Of course, time marches on, things will be forgotten, but some of us will not forget. And this Phoenix will rise. Those call letters are the legacy of rock radio in the South. It will be back somehow.

Someone please get in touch with the Reverend Billy Gibbons, and Frank and Dusty, see if they're still breathing. My email's attached, I want to try a rally down at the Balinese.

Posted by: big E on November 19, 2004 6:44 PM

1st Mega is not a 'Mexican' format(it's spanish Pop, Rap, Alt., and Reggae). Besides..they play more Puerto Rican music than anything. I'm sad to see ROCK101 leave but these monkeys in the booth only play what they're told...Your rage should go to the execs, and not bash hispanics...Which I may add, will not the minority in TX within the next 2 years (And that's NOT including the illegals!)

Posted by: Ray on November 19, 2004 7:16 PM

Well, mi amigos, I am just as sad, anrgy, and disappointed as anyone else that 101 changed it's format. I first thought Outlaw Dave was playing an extended joke.
It's ironic that 500 years after Cortez and his ilk imposed the Spanish language and customs on the Native Americans, here CC is imposing a Spanish language staion on us locals. However, like Ray noted here on 11/19, spanish language does not a Mexican make - if you're gonna hate on us, don't forget the Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Guatemalans, Peruvians, or all of the other Central and South Americans. Whatever that garbage currently being broadcast is, it's not Tejano nor is it Mexican(Is there such a thing as Mexican radio? No!) Jazz, bluegrass, country, and pop are sung in English, but are distinctive and separate, not lumped together as American. Let's keep this dialogue on the issue, this should not be a forum to bash any other culture/language.
Simply changing the format pisses me off, it doesn't matter to me if they had changed it country, rap, jazz, or pop. They shouldn't have messed w/ the rock format, period. I got turned on to 101 back in the early 80's when they used to compete w/ 96.5 Rock, I joined the Colonel's Rock'n Roll Army in the 8th grade! Rock was what united all of us in high school, chicanos, white boys, "brothers", etc. So please don't hate on the language being spoken on the new format - Spanish was spoken here first, you know, after the Spaniards committed genocide on the natives - Hate on the format change!
I thought the consumer dictated the product, not the other way around; I hope the new format falls flat on it's ass and continues to do so until they bring back our Rock 101, KLOL!

CC SUCKS BRING BACK ROCK 101

Posted by: Lee on November 20, 2004 4:20 AM

Wendy Miller is now with the BUzz, and they seem to have diversivied their progamming slightly since KLOL went off. Walton and Johnson could be annoying, but they were better than any other morning crap on the radio these days.

I really can't understand how a corperation can simply shut down a highly profitable department of the corperation for no reason. They show they have no interest in the listeners by these types of actions. But we are the reason they make money. If no one listens, CC will not have any advertisers.

I remeber when they Buzz was going off the air, they gave the listenrs notice and allowed them to show their support, which ended up saving teh station on anotehr channel. I can only imagine how many people would have rallied to save KLOL.

To me it seems like stupid business. If I had CC stock you can bet I'd be questioning business moves such as this - reguardless of if I liked rocked or not.

Posted by: Jack on November 20, 2004 7:57 AM

CC stocks are droping lets get them where it hurts GG houston we want or true Rock Back... so we need to get them where it hurts there stock droped total of .80 keep it droping... Houston let's get our station back this is America not Mexico!

Posted by: Joan on November 20, 2004 8:48 AM

Well, as you can see by my name I am mexican. Born in Mexico and raised in Houston. I am a 37 year old and was a faithful listener of 101 KLOL since I can remember. Because of my older brothers I was a proud soldier of Cornonel St. James' Rock n Roll Army and a (KMD)Killer Macho Dude through high school. I can even remember when KILT 100.3 changed its format from rock to country. And when MOBY defected to 101 from 97 Rock. It was sad when the radio gods split and then the release of Greggo & Pruitt. The station was the sound track to my life. I will truley miss the rock format and I feel like I lost a member of the family. The DJs came and went, but rock was always there. It will never die. And as for the new format, why 101 KLOL? Why not SUNNY 99.9 or MIX 96.5? They also belonged to Clear Channel. Or better yet, why not one of the three AM stations? Also, just buy another station and start from fresh. I have nothing against the new format. Hell, Houston has a lot of young latinos (Puerto Ricans, Cubanos, Mexicanos, Salvadorenos, Guatamalenos, Panamanians, etc.) who need their latino hip hop, salsa, merengue, and tropical music too, but why 101 KLOL. This is not about the color, creed, race, or place in society. IT IS ABOUT OUR ROCK MUSIC AND OUR ROCK STATION! I enjoyed our old DJs and they can come and they can go, but bring back the station and and the music. I am sure Mr. Abraham Quintanilla and Abie Quintanilla wouldn't mind changing to another station. After all, I have listen to the new station since it took to the air. (never speak unless you have listened.) And it sounds like the new station plays The Kumbia Kings every other song. So, my plea goes out to the Clear Channel Execs (and The Quintanilla's), bring back my 101 KLOL ROCK station. Oh, and I too am latino and proud of rock and roll. Thank you for your time.

THE 4TH LARGEST CITY AND WE DONT HAVE A METAL STATION. SOMEONE SHOULD LET THEM KNOW

Posted by: jak in the box on November 20, 2004 12:17 PM

I have signed the partitions and sent e-mails, but realize that only commercial support (or non-support) of advertisers and Arbitron ratings is what drives the business.

As a personal effort, I purchased a Bring Back KLOL tee-shirt from the web site.

As a personal effort, and at risk of creating price competition that I would be selfish to not do, I have gone to eBay to buy up KLOL commemmorative items from those who care to share them. I will frame my "runaway radio" t-shirt and hang it on the wall in my business. I can guarantee it will be a conversation starter.

As a personal effort, I have taken the time to read through these posts and cut and paste the informative ones to an e-mail to my friends and associates that would share our collective rage at this action by Clear Channel.

As a personal desire, I would only hope some day to be able to express my emotions about this event as eloquently and accurately as that done by "big E" just a couple of posts up.

This is not an ethnic problem, it is an economic problem. Vote with your pocketbooks against Clear Channel. It may not undo history, but perhaps it can influence future events.

Please come back, Rock 101, K(pause) LOL (pause), Houston's Rock Station. Yes, the brand we identified with (and a resource now squandered). Live ON, Stevens & Pruitt, Eddie the Boner Sanchez, Lanny Griffith and Traffic in Bondage, Walton & Johnson, Wendy, Locke, Outlaw Dave, Crash, and the ones who came before...

Just wanted to post this here since it's faster than applying for a copyright:

YO QUIERO MI KLOL!

There. A nice hybrid of Yo Quiero Taco Bell and I want my MTV. Hispanic flavor and mainstream media. I think I'll have some T-shirts printed up... Can't use a chihuahua, Taco Bell would sue me. How about a runaway radio with a big bandido hat, bandoleros y pistolas, and a Pancho Villa moustache?

Don't steal my idea. I'll sue you. I may be Hispanic, but I'm a big bad demographic now. I HAVE POWER!

Even though I do like the new flavor of this station, I don't like it enough to sacrifice the rock of KLOL. What other station is going to give ZZ Top a decent rotation? Hispanic + KLOL = The Lowrider. All my friends call me the Lowrider.

Clear Channel, go home!

Posted by: Juan Carlos Rodriguez on November 20, 2004 3:49 PM

We need to have a strong showing. If we dont show a STRONG showing then Clear Channels will know they won and they wont hesistate to turn thier back even further to us!!!! Call your friends, relative, co-workers everyone and get them out there!!!!!

The news WILL be there! Everyone is waiting/watching what we do...
Clear Channels is waiting for us to fall flat on our faces so they can tell thier higher ups...see this "so-called" movement was just a bunch of smoke and that thier decision to rob Houston of its ROCK "Was the right one"

The media at the RALLY is waiting for us to fail as well, they want us to not have a large turnout, and/or have someone mess up and get thrown in jail or call our RALLY a protest, it is a protest but a silent non-vindictive showing of our support for our culture, if we give them any reason to deamonize us you KNOW they will use it against us.

Our culture is being assimiltated/brushed aside for a new larger demographic!
We cant allow OUR culture to die this way...There are still the same numbers of rockers there were 10 years ago, unfortunately the spanish/latino population has grown at an astronomical rate and have "swallowed" ours up!

What do we do now?

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT AND DONT ALLOW OUR ROCK AND ROLL TO BE BRUSHED ASIDE BECAUSE WE DONT HAVE THE "NUMBERS" ANYMORE...WE ARENT NUMBERS WE ARE LOYAL AND HAVE ALWAYS BEEN LOYAL LISTENERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ROCK ON!!!!!!!

Walton & Johnson have dominated the mornings in New Orleans and Baton Rouge for years. Somebody in Houston should pick them up. I have no doubt we will still have them here in La. sooner or later. If you don't like W&J you just don't get it.

Posted by: Tom H on November 20, 2004 10:07 PM

Gee, Clear Channel. You shut down OUR radio station in favor of what YOU think the hispanic crowd wants. Funny thing is, a good 80% of the radio in Houston is spanish language... And looking at the posts above, I'd say you pissed off a goodly portion of the very audience you targeted. Just what I'd expect of a bunch of ignorant, brain dead fatcats. Alienate your target audience. Real fucking bright. What will you do for an encore? It'd be hard to top this! Oh yeah, while we're on the subject of target audience, a good number of latino/hispanic folks at work were KRTS classical station listeners. Guess what? Suddenly finding their music replaced with crap really made their days too! You've actually managed to unite the local classical and rock listeners. Now we're all out for your blood. Like I said, really fucking smart. Pulled a good one over on your shareholders. too. I hope I die before you SOB's do, 'cause I want a front row seat on your judgement day. Bet you guys will make great ceiling lamps in Hell.

WTF?!?!?!

Clear Channel, Clear Channel,Clear Channel!

Playing the demographics card huh? Do you fools really think this city needs another ghetto station not to mention it's mostly cuban and puerto rican sound..." a station for us" That "us" does not include Mexicans. That "us" is for the island peeps and THE RAZA outnumbers them 8 to 1 here in Houston. We listen to spanish ROCK, not spanish rap. That shit is for the clubs, maybe 2 nights a week and time to pull the plug until next weekend. You would probably do better playing Spanish rock than the crap on Mega. Mega? wtf is that all about? Couldn't you fucking pinheads have come up with some a little more creative? Mega-Gay.

I think Big E's post nails it down pretty good. Read it you fucktards.

Of the stations you COULD HAVE replaced, you choose the one with the biggest following and hardcore faithfuls. Didn't you shit-for-brains go to the Halloween party or were all of you playing grab ass in the corporate closets? ROCK 101 is/was a STRONG BRAND. Again, wtf is Mega? Mega Sucks? Mega Pendejos? Mega Chupas?
( I propose that if anyone is caught blurting out Mega-what-ever-the-fuck they get smacked for showing dipshit behavior).

You corporate honkies have left a vacuum in this city as big as the hole in your heads. ok, maybe not. It's way bigger than your heads. It's so big that God Willing with Allah's help that some other radio frequency air hog will come in and feed the need. And hopefully they do it so well that you bunch of cocksucking, cum guzzling, sperm bubble blowing wankers regret ever dropping the station. There's no point in asking you imbicils to bring the station back....as if. So it's better to just vent and tell you how much you really suck because of it. You bunch of lolliegaggers. It's safe to assume that you needle dicks will ignore the outcry, let the solvent of time wear us down, and accept this mega shit to run its course.

Well to bad you bunch of fat slimy fucking walruses I will not conform. I was blown away when I heard some fucking guy rapping some shit in spanish. I tried listening but only lasted 2 songs. us mexican like to kick back, drink, and LISTEN to good music, not dance around to some fucked up hippity hoppity merengue salsa mix. Island peeps like dancing around in circles and tearing up a fucking room. We chill. Even the hippity hoppity cumbias sound all chafa n shit.

any fucking way, let me remind you, yes you CC, how much you fucking mosquito dicks absolutely blow. Fucking Balls Deep man.

You twinkled toe fudge packing flamers should have at least attempted to give KLOL just half a red-headed cunt hair of respect and courtesy to give the listeners and the station a chance to save it somewhere on houston's weak and pitiful frequency band.

You fucking analwarts waited until the very last minute. You left the station employees twisting in the fucking wind. Goes to show what Clear Channel as a whole is really about.

Fucking Karma man, it will be cumming your way.

Houston is ripe for Pirate Radio but I bet you bunch of Munchhausen by proxy survivors would ream anybody who tried huh you fuckos?

I wish you the worst evil possible-- may you be allergic to water until KLOL is brought back on the air.

Until next time you glory hole parasites.

-Fat BAstard

That means no showers, no nothing. not even sweating.
HA!

ROCK N ROLL WILL RISE AGAIN....SOON.

it's a combination of CC owning interest in XM radio *and* the hispanic population explosion here. they are trying to force our demographic to switch to XM. they probably wouldn't mind if we bought Sirius, either. just so that middle-class radio consumers (white and otherwise) continue to migrate away from free radio. we already have toll-roads, cable tv, pay-per-view, etc. what DON'T pay for anymore ?

immigration is a bigger issue, and is killing our quality of life in the US. of course, CC is no different from the old southern land owners and others, who drove the slave trade, wanting free labor to maximize their profit. we're not much different nowadays, wanting the mexicans to flock up here by the millions, to work for $5 an hour, so that our "Wal-Mart" society can propagate.

if you want to change things ... write your congressman, protest, petition, boycott, do *something* besides post your "opinion" here.

otherwise, I suggest you teach your kids to speak spanish.

FIGHT BACK - FIGHT BACK - FIGHT BACK - FIGHT BACK

Let's keep something clear. Clear Channel in NOT in the business of maintaining artisitic diversity - it is in the business of increasing shareholder value by exploiting untapped markets and demographics. Observe this quote from CC's webpage:

"The Clear Channel Creed - It's What We Believe!
We are in the business of helping our customers grow their businesses. We do this effectively with our wide variety of media and entertainment products."

"We believe the ultimate measure of our success is to provide a superior value to our stockholders."

Hmm...I don't see much in their system of beliefs that values the intrinsic worth of the arts at all. Music is an "entertainment product", customers are advertisers, and we, the audience, are simply a target demographic. This is the state of radio.

We can't change what has happened to KLOL.

BUT WE CAN SUBVERT THE SYSTEM. BE AN ANARCHIST! FIGHT BACK AGAINST McRADIO!

Here are the email addresses of the various CC executives. FLOOD THEIR EMAILS. FORWARD THESE ADDRESSES TO ANYONE WHO'LL WRITE!

Ken Charles, VP of Prgramming for the Houston Area, stated that KLOL's "time had come". Well, maybe for you, Ken, but not for the rest of us.

In the words of RUSH, we still belive in "art as expression, not as marketing campaigns". Shame on you for bastardizing and warping the trueist form of FREE EXPRESSION. PISS ON THE SYSTEM. LONG LIVE ROCK!!!!!!!!

I miss Walton and Johnson but the new station has grown on me! It's like living in San Antonio or McAllen. Let's be open minded and enjoy the new tunes that have been out for a year in Miami and Los Angeles but we would never otherwise hear here!

Posted by: Jesse on November 21, 2004 6:05 PM

RE: open minded

I for one don't speak spanish, so how can I enjoy it ? and even if it was in english, I don't like all that disco house crap anyway.

they could have brought new tunes to any other different channel on the dial. they didn't have to torpedo KLOL. so they really pissed off alot of people unnecessarily. CC has taken away alot more than they've "given back". they've really just given the finger to every true KLOL fan out there.

Posted by: englich on November 21, 2004 10:06 PM

Clear Channel's KLOL simply changed markets.
They went from On-Star to Jumper Cables..

Posted by: DirtyDon on November 22, 2004 5:54 AM

Look, Englich, there are already 16 Spanish-laguage stations here. CC could have picked a useless station to rape. But, no...they had to kill a Houston institution. We don't give an aeronautical fornication what the listeners in other cities are listening to, CC had no right to do what they did, we aren't letting them off the hook for this, and we won't tolerate the listeners of the "new" station, either. That crap does NOT belong on the airwaves on that station. Why didn't they target LaRaza or Estereo Puto or one of those stations, huh!? No, they just added yet another crap station to the airwaves, and wiped out KLOL. Fuck Clear Channel, and ALL of their listeners of any kind.

Posted by: Don Dickerson on November 22, 2004 8:53 PM

Shit, Englich, sorry 'bout that. That last post of mine was aimed at Jesse, the guy you replied to...shows what happens when ya let things get to ya...

Posted by: Don Dickerson on November 22, 2004 8:55 PM

I don't think CC actually just targeted KLOL at random instead of killing one of those 16 Latino-spanish format stations everyone in this Forum is complaining about. There is a process involved just like all other business related decisions, that's what marketing is about. CC OWNS THE WOODLANDS PAVILION, and if you are planning to go there for a heavy metal concert next summer, remember that your money will also go into CC's pocket. Just the same way all the latinos who listen to those crappy stations like Mega, they will buy some product advertised on that station. CC aren't fools, they know very well what they are doing. They don't give a rat's ass about "Houston Institutions", come on, don't be so naive and ignorant. I am also sorry to see KLOL go but some things can never be changed or avoided. Yes, the latino audience is big; most of them drive trucks loaded with landscape or construction workers listening all day to any of those shitty 16 stations because that music makes their jobs less miserable and also at factories where the mayority are latinos tuned in to mega or stereo latino mierda.I am also hispanic by the way and understand my culture crystal clear. So if you go to a Metal or Rock concert, tell the guys at the 93.7 tent to add some metallic spice to their programming, that's all we can hope for. And it's Guatemaltecos or Guatemalans not Guatemalenos.

I read Tim D's post and it hit me as clear as a diamond bullet crashing throught my cranium. That same morning, I read Howard Stern is at a media event handing out Sirius radios, he's making the jump to satellite. This guy got taken off the radio public airwaves, but now he's back but we have to pay for it???

We're fucked. We'll pay for what we want, so hey, that's what they'll let us do. Look a few posts up. How many complainers and whiners throw up the "I'm getting satellite radio, screw this," defense? Well, sure, if we (CC) control the satellite radio, and we can place programming there you want, and you'll subscribe and buy the hardware so we recapture that demographic as we move into a new one, what's the downside for us? Us being CC, of course. Plots within plots.

Acknowledgement to the brothers in arms TxUmp and Fat Bastard for their compliments to my previous post. TxUmp, you've got the writing style, it's a lost art. Fat Bastard, I envy your fire and enthusiasm, but you make me a bit nervous. Thank you for the props, but back off the caffeine (or whatever). You hit some phrases that had me spewing beer from the nostrils. "Twinkle-toed fudge packing flamers." "Mosquito dicks." "Fat slimy walruses." "Corporate honkies." "Fucking analwarts." Uh, point well-taken, adequately described. But, relax, bro. Keep the anger channeled. Keep the war within the zone.

Don't get me wrong, after a couple years playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I'm itching for a grenade launcher into the corporate offices. I fully understand this legal defense of rock songs and violent video games. But let's stick with reality.

What can we do? What can we really do? We wait, and see how their offensive develops. Great idea, TxUmp, I jumped on Ebay to scrounge what I could on memorabilia. We'll see. Wait. Listen. Look for the opportunity. Know what I heard from my 30-year old dispatcher today? "I wasn't that upset, but the more I surf the dial, there ain't shit out there. They fucked up taking away KLOL." That's the people talking. "I'm OK if I've got an alternative." "But I get pissed if I don't." Awaken, you sleeping giant. Let your voice be heard.

Posted by: big E on November 23, 2004 8:01 PM

I read an article recently where the CEO of CC indicated thet they are very aware how upset many folks are, not only about KLOL, but KRTS as well. He said, very plainly, that they do not care what we want, our demographic is too small to support their investing in a station, Rock is dead, and so is classical, they don't care what we think, those stations will not return to their original formats. If you desire to listen to either one, they will be happy to sell you airtime on XM or Sirius. Clear channel owns XM outright, and owns controlling interest in Sirius. CC contends that they cannot make enough money on rock or classical to justify a broadcast station for either. Lack of listeners and advertising income killed both stations. They (Clear Channel) do not believe that any boycotting will affect them, because the former listeners of KLOL and KRTS comprise too small a group to affect them. Bad as I hate to admit it, from a business standpoint, they're right. Doing a little research of my own, I have asked almost everyone at work, almost 200 people. what they listen to. 2 country, one rock (me, and what I listen to can't be braodcast), 1 classical (hispanic and upset about KRTS),and the rest all hiphop... That is only one company. And most of those hiphop listeners are hispanic in this case.
I don't know about you guys, but if this reflects the demographics of this area, that's why KLOL is dead. Either we start a listener sponsored station (ask the Pacifica folks how well that works...) or we just listen to tape, CD's, etc. And remeber, no matter what kind of music you listen to, clear channel also owns PAce Concerts and Ticketmaster. NO artist plays in ANY major venue in America without going through Pace, Ticketmaster and Clear Channel. Any concert you go to comes to you via Clear Channel. Hate to sound fatalistic, but this does not look good.

Posted by: Don Dickerson on November 23, 2004 8:25 PM

I am pissed that rock in Houston is gone. But maybe now it's time for a new rock station. KLOL was great but I got tired of listening to the same 3 songs by any group. I got tired of them kissing Kid Rock's and Metallica's asses on a daily basis. There is more to rock than just those 2, and more songs to most groups than just their top 3. The Big Dog in Beaumont plays all kinds of rock from the same groups, not just the same thing over and over again. I did think "the Pit" was a step in the right direction. Maybe the next rock station will come back even better. BTW, Clear Communications also owns 93.7 Classic Rock, the Buzz, and 96.5 Mix. Be very afraid....

Just to let everyone know that Ken Charles of 950 talk radio is the one who did the firing and was proud of it. what a jerk

Posted by: Eroc on November 24, 2004 9:15 AM

I commend Don Dickerson for not being a business-illiterate, ignorant hippie as the rest of the posters of which posts I have read. Don Dickerson understands why the change came about. He is in the know. Also, I would like to bring up the fact that the new mega 101 is revolutionary for Houston and pretty much the entire country besides New York and Puerto Rico, which is where the music played on Mega 101 is mainly composed. What the majority of you ignorant fools do not understand is that 1) The new mega plays reggaeton, a music style that no other Spanish language station in the country was willing to play until recently. and 2) Mega is revolutionary for the Houston area because it is not owned, funded or supported by Univision, it's competition. Univision funds five Spanish language radio stations in the Houston area and one English hip-hop station. Ever heard of 104.9 Party (the one with five out of six DJs hispanic)? When every one talks about how Houston already has 17 radio stations already broadcast in Spanish, what they probably don't realize is that the majority of those are unclear, pieces of crap, AM band stations of which Univision funds two. And of the about 5 FM clear stations, Univision owns 3. Univision is notorious for its connections with Televisa (A station with such an advantage and political preference in Mexico that they were able to put Presidente Vicente Fox into office.), sometimes, in the mornings, they just play re-runs of the Televisa network and the majority of the shows broadcasted on their station were originally created by Televisa, this is danger to the Hispanic community in Houston. The mere fact that 101.1 is not owned by Univision and they are speaking Spanish is revolutionary. 3) Thirdly and lastly, Don Dickerson is right, the rock genre is fading. People are getting tired of repeated, antique songs. People are listening to something new-Hip-hop, and in the Hispanic community, especially the youth, something even newer is being heard-Reggaeton. Its a big and delicious pie and Clear Channel wants a piece.

I'm in the military (originally from Houston) and never would have thought 101 would change format! I started listening in the 5th grade and they were still goin' many, many years later when I went home on vacation.

I just read about this today and don't know the full scoop but I'm retiring back home in about three years and will always miss the good old days of Moby and Matthews in the Morning....."GET YOUR LAZY ASSES OUT OF BED!" Good times!

Posted by: Jim on November 24, 2004 3:02 PM

There is no Thanksgiving this year. CC took care of that. They say that the young Latino demographic needed a voice, at what expense? OUR EXPENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apparently our voice doesn't mean anything anymore, we have been replaced. Hell, we are the MINORITY! What about the rock n roll holiday roll up your sleeves blood drive? No klol means no blood drive, how many lives may be lost, I'm not saying this for effect, I gave every year. A benefit concert won't work without a radio station to back it up and advertise. Maybe zz top could buy a radio station, go in with king's x and helstar/destiny's end,the guys in pantera were always down here, I know they broke up so now they are damageplan. Outlaw Dave, we miss you.

looks like the post frequency in this board have diminished.

Posted by: Kyle Moore on November 25, 2004 11:32 AM

Well, gee Kyle, thanks, (I think). Yes, I recognize the business side of this farce. No, I don't like it, but America is a democracy. We all love democracy, don't we. That means Majority Rule. So if you are in ANY kind of minority, that's just tough. Now, there are probably many more rock fans out there than CC or anyone thinks. Just go to any concert and see how packed the place is. Go to any Slayer concert - packed venue, and with no advertising, no airplay. Most every band these days can pack a stadium and these bands get no airplay!? BUT...for some reason, while the old KKZR at 106.9 was able to broadcast these type bands, no one else can? I still don't understand. Anyway, there is a huge rock following, but you aren't going to hear it on the radio, except satellite. I am telling you, folks, get a computer, an MP3 player, and listen to what you want, when you want it. No commercials, and no shithead censors telling us that radio can't broddcast "fuck" when almost everyone uses the word in common everyday language. Time was when all the hispanic kids were wearing Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, etc. tshirts. Why did they turn to hiphop. Beats me, I personally can't relate. I used to write bith letters constatnly telling KLOL I din't want to hear Petty Tom or Kid Can't Fucking Rick at All, I wanna hear Slipknot, Pantera, Slayer, Bimmu Borgir, All Out War, I'm 48 and with a real job and money to spend. They didn't care, now they're dead. They outright refused to cater to those who could have kept them on the air. They ignored the rules of business, and folks, THERE IS NO FREE LUNCH. Clear Channel discovered they were broadcasting to a tiny audience and cashed it in rather than have 101 be a drain on their corporate budget. No matter how bad this sucks, along with many changes we see everry day. Hell, the world I grew up in is long gone. All I can do is adjust. However, that will NOT include learning to speak spanish. IF the folks at whatever business choose to ignore me and others like me, we will take our money elsewhere. And if they don't miss it, fine. But this moaning over KLOL is gonna have to give way to some creative solution, or it's all for nothing. Yes, folks, rock listeners, of any color, are a minority. We may hate it, but that is how it is, for now. Could cahnge in the future. And you folks that like hiphop will get your turn, too. Get ready to kiss your music goodbye from the radio one day. Will it die out? No, just go underground, existing only at concerts, and whatever recorded media. One thing that you can count on will be change. It's gonna suck, but you can count on it!

Time to Switch from English to Spanish!

Posted by: DirtyDon on December 1, 2004 6:19 AM

Maybe it has slowed down because those that were running at the mouth when this nightmare began only wanted to jump on the bandwagon. I for one am in total admiration and adoration of Outlaw Dave. He makes Houston a city worth living in. Go to www.outlawdave.net and see all that he is doing still to help the community. He is someone that we should all look up to, as he sets the bar high for personal execellence.I only wish there were more people out there willing to give or help in some way. Dave, YOU ROCK!!!!! And you know that you are the best that Houston ever had. It was you that kept KLOL going as long as it did. You created something huge and you will always be our OUTLAW!!!

Posted by: Michele Townsend on December 1, 2004 12:00 PM

Gee...I always thought Crash Collins made KLOL what it was. Outlaw Dave came along a bit later. Hopefully we can bring KLOL back. There's room on the airwaves. But Clear Channel is gonna fight it. We need about 300,000 people to get the station back, so everyone support the effort and we'll have a chance. Yeah, that's right. We have to show someone that there really is a market, or forget it. Unless someone out there has money to burn on a station...

Posted by: Don Dickerson on December 1, 2004 8:10 PM

Well Don, it's Outlaw Dave that outlasted them all. From Outlaw Radio on at 10pm to becoming Outlaw Dave during our drive home. So you see all those others were NOT what kept KLOL alive as long as Dave did. If it were not for him we would have been kissing KLOL goodbye a long time ago. Anyway we all have a common goal here and that's to bring back Rock to Houston. I am just thankful that Dave is still around. So again, from me to you Dave, Thank you for rockin' all our asses off!!!! I know that you always will. Here Here to OUTLAW DAVE!!!

Yes, the posts have dwindled. As has the outcry for something to be done. But, in the face of large corporate movement, we are swept aside.

To Don: damn right, Crash ruled the airwaves for years. Made outlaw dave look like an ameteur. Do you remember the "bump, bump," anecdote? I know Michelle doesn't. He fell asleep during playback of a Beatles tune, back when they played everything from vinyl. Last track. At the end of the song, he's not there. Are any of you old enough to remember getting to the last track of a vinyl album??? The arm and needle just sit there, bouncing back and forth, making this "bump, bump, bump," sound. After a few dead minutes on the air, he comes on, "Hey, this is Crash, wasn't that great? (aside) "What the hell were we listening to?" "Alright, let's rock some more!!!" Hilarious.

Unfortunately, there will be no more KLOL. Michelle, you need therapy. I think you'd like outlaw dave to do a litte more than "rock your ass". There's hero worship, and there's stalker. But, we're all together in wanting the radio station back. No offense, just an observation. Outlaw is great, I loved listening to him, but as a 30 year client, he's no Crash, or Stevens & Pruett, or Moby.

My memory fails me. Anyone remember the cute blondish woman who was at the KLOL Runaway Hotline charity auction at the Summit in 1987, and presented me with the Stevie Ray Vaughan autographed gold album I outbid everyone for? She was a standard DJ. It was the gold album from the RIAA for "Texas Flood." Sittin' here right next to me, hangin' on the wall. My best KLOL memory. What the hell was her name???

God, she was cute. For $1550, I figured she should've come along with the framed gold album. 'Course now, years after SRV's helicopter crash, that $1550 is chickenfeed. But, know what? Just like I like my KLOL, I wouldn't part with this signed, sparkly memorabilia for 10 times what I bid that night.

Oh well. I'll be dead some day, and Mega 101 can rule in my stead.

I would wake up every morning and listen to the walton and johnson show EVERY day, now instead we are listing too jose and pedro! thats a load of bull! BRING BACK OUR ROCK STATION!

A blast from the recent past. On crisp, clear, cold winter mornings, ionospheric magic lets me pull in 98.1, The Eagle, from Baton Rouge on my morning drive over here in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area. It's the Walton and Johnson show, good as ever. Those coon-asses who got them back on the air have it together!

To anyone that's sad for the rock station, my condolences, but I do believe that it is time to educate most of the Houstonians that NOT EVERYONE THAT SPEAKS SPANISH IS A MEXICAN, and yes is called SPANISH not mexican, why don'y you guys and gals eduacte yourselves just a little bit more, trust me, we don't like to be called mexicans, nothing wrong with them, just ask where we are from, nobody is going to rip your head off (in that case try mexican instead)going back to why i started writting this e-mail.
Do you like the Banda or Norteño music??? neither do I or 3/4 of the latinos that live in Houston, trust me not even half of the mexican population that live here, that kind of music is more for the people that lives upper north in mexico, almost getting to Texas (lovely state), we listen to reggaetton, salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia (colombian cumbia do, not tath mexican thing thay came up with)why then is the latino population being attack????
I will love to see that so called show "Raul Brindis y Pepito" go, and never come back, and put your rock station back on the air, trust me we won't miss it a bit, all I'm asking for is some respect towards each other, you guys want to listen to music, so do we.
There's plenty of Tejano stations, we can just take 1 or 2 off the air and bring rock back to Houston, is just a matter of time and to run it thru the right people, but pestering and badmouthing the latino population is not going to make it happen any quicker.
I am Latina, and I am Proud of my heritage, but that don't mean that I have to be stuck listening to Tejano music 24/7.
Bring their rock station back but to another dial, and remember treat everyone the same way you will like to be treated. Thanks Vanessa

Vanessa, I think most opf us here are not against Latinos, only that CC wiped one of the few english-language stations left, being a rock station not withstanding. I use a little device called a "sound feeder". It lets me play my CD player through the FM radio. All you have to do is fine an open channel. Not easy in the Houston area. WHile trying to find an open spot I discovered that we have maybe two open channels left, At least 90% of the 20 plus stations I detected were spanish language. Personally I have no problem with folks speaking any language. They have a right and a responsibility to maintain their heritage. BUT...while english may not be the "official" language of the US, most of us speak english, only. I WILL NOT learn spanish unless I move to a spanish speaking country. If I move to Germeny, I will learn german. Those that come here need to learn english. Nothing burns my butt more than to go to the neighborhood I grew up in and you can't read signs on businesses and it looks just like I drove across the border into Matamoros! Most of us here are just frosted over losing our rock station and classical stations to an audience that controls almost all of the Houston area airwaves already. Couldn't they have converted an existing spanish station to this format? What's done is done. Thank the Goddess for MP3's!

To Big E: I was listening the night Crash nodded out on the air (there was a good reason he was called Crash...). We all thought it was great! Remember the free concerts at Milby Park? That was where I first met Crash. He was wild then. KLOL will never be that good again even if they bring it back!

I found an ad for KLOL circa 1986 on an old tape. It features Stevens & Pruett, and Lanny Griffith. It was aired on KPRC Channel 2 during a Miami Vice episode. I've digitized it and compressed it for RealPlayer. Enjoy!

PS: You can spread this link, don't worry about the bandwidth. AOL does not meter their server.

Don, I do understand what you mean, i will not miss any of those radio stations either, specially the one i had mentioned on my first post, i do believe that they could had done better just switching one of those crappy stations, and leave 101 the way it was with english rock, but i guess what's done is done, maybe they had their reasons to do it, and I do agree with you, all of the latinos should learn english, 'cause guess what dude they're in the big USA.
Like most of the latinos i know, the speak spanish at home or when needed, other than that is english, sorry about your old neighborhood, but they should take their hand into the matter and fix it up, make it look neat and organized, like any other naighborhood.
Thanks for understanding and for making a nice comment.

Im Glad Finally Some Radio Station Ment to lift peoples spirit, not everyone is a pervert or really boring. There are few radio stations in spanish to listen for example 102.9 "The Raul Brindis and pepito show" yeah sometimes the music is nice but most of the time they talk about nothing but adult stuff how can we listen to that on the way to dropping off the kids to school. The other Rdio station caled 106.5 is so boring the music is ment for really old people besides its really rare for them to play new releases. Finally they came up with this Radio station MEGA 101.1 the kids really get happy on the way to school its a trend setter and mostly people between the ages from todlers up to like 35-40 listen and Jam to this Radio station so in my opinion LA MEGA 101.1 LLEGO PARA QUEDARSE 102.9 and 106.5 is ment for perverts or really borring people.

Well, I know we'll never get KLOL back. I tried to listen to Mega one day, but it just mega chupas... As a dedicated metalhead, I just can't handle anything non-rock. Hell, Sepultura plays in spanish, doesn't bother me that I can't understand the vocals, I'm a guitar person and their guitarist is great. This is not a spanish versus english thing as much as it is a "why didn't they change an existing spanish station to this format?" thing. Oh well. Houston's last real rock station died when KZRR went off the air, now KLOL. KILT and KAUM went byebye long ago, KPFT has lost it's mind from lack of good drugs,I suppose. So now we have: The Buzz (BIG yawn), and The Arrow. Classic rock would be OK if they would play more than just what they THINK is classic rock. When was the last time you heard the 13th Floor Elevators on The Arrow? Bubble Puppy? No, the real issue here is that Clear Channel and others play only what they want to play. Don't like it? Subscribe to satellite/XM, whatever. They own that too. And they love taking your money. Support the MP3 format, burn CD's, be your own radio station. When enough people tune out, it'll be too late.

Posted by: Don Dickerson on January 20, 2005 8:08 PM

Be sure to tune in to 97.5 KIOL. The resurrection has begun. Walton & Johnson and Outlaw Dave surely will follow soon as their non-compete clauses expire.

I love rock & roll.

- Nancy - Latina & Proud 4 Eva!!

Posted by: Nancy on January 22, 2006 6:25 PM

Im glad to have seen it go.It was one of the lamest so called rock stations around.Back when Z-rock and 97 rock {yes im old !} were on the air it was reported by the Houston Press that klol kept filling lawsuits against them to get them to have to close. I miss Z-rock alot more then I"ll ever miss Klol. There were times where people would call and request good metal tunes like Morbid angel and the Jerks would mock them, say they never heard of them and play "hard rock" like Elton John. good riddance Klol .Maybe now Houston will have some hope of getting some good rock stations.I just wish Klol had a actual grave so I could go piss on it

Posted by: realrocker on February 13, 2006 3:26 AM

Although I now live in Atlanta (Yes - CC took a good station here and made it into what is now being called 'Planet Wetback'), I will mourn the loss of K101. I used to listen to them as I did my homework as a student at Robt. E Lee HS (Renamed Lee HS and dropped football). Worthy of memory was the Jack Smack Wax Stack Tuck-In each night.

I feel old. At least I have XM and my MP3 Player.
