Heflin to challenge election

You know, I try not to curse or swear on this site, but I'm having a hard time controlling myself.

State Rep. Talmadge Heflin will ask the state House of Representatives today to overturn the results of his failed re-election bid and either order him returned to the Legislature or call for a new election.

Heflin's attorney, Andy Taylor, said the election results in state House District 149 in southwest Harris County were fraught with voting irregularities and potential fraud, most of which occurred in predominantly Democratic precincts.

"The true outcome of this election was stolen from the voters in House District 149," Taylor said Tuesday. "We will prove that Representative Talmadge Heflin was re-elected."

Bastard. I cannot begin to express the contempt and enmity I have right now for Andy Taylor, Talmadge Heflin, and any other Republican who would join in this cynical and power-hungry coup. A pox on them all.

Greg has the information you need to take action. And for the record, Kevin owes all the readers of this blog a beer.

UPDATE: More from Sarah.

Anger over election thievery was the burning issue that drove some of the current generation of republican operatives to power. Let's hope it works both ways.

The San Antonio Express-News is reporting today that the GOP may contest one or two other races besides the Vo-Heflin race. (Gonzalez-Toureilles versus Opiela, and Leibowitz versus Mercer) I hadn't heard about this possibility before. Do you know anything about these other cases? Might they actually try to steal 3 elections from us?

Andy Taylor, you should be ashamed to call yourself a Republican. Your election bullcrap is worse than Al Gore's. I'm serious, take off your fake trunk and tusk because you're acting like a complete jackass.

The votes have been counted, now recounted, when will Talmadge Heflin realize he lost?

You don't see Ted Poe or Martha Wong with this problem, do you? It's because they got off their butts and campaigned, and judging by the gravy hanging off you chin, Talmadge, you went to Thanksgiving dinner a month early.

Democracy is more important than party, and I'm proud to support little Hubert Vo in this one. If you had campaigned 1 / 10th of what he did, Hefe, you wouldn't need that slick Andy Taylor to steal you your re-election.

If this year, as a Republican, you can't win when the Presidency, Senate, and the House all go for us and you can't beat someone whose never run for office before, quit trying to steal babies and go back to Alief. And don't allow your mouthpiece to attack other Republicans for running 'illegal' elections. Republicans deserve better than that.

This is disappointing. I'd hoped Heflin would act with more grace.

But this race is not the nation's recount headliner. The Washington governor's race has just completed a machine recount and Rossi holds a 42 vote lead over Gregoire. Just 42 votes out of 2.8 million cast - cool.

It's time to start the Heflin: Sore Loser meme. They are already doing it to Gregoire (with some justification, is a recount really called-for?)

Well, I'll be damned.

As per the original comment, folks who want to collect at some point can email. Stag's Head seems like the most likely venue, and the fact it has wi-fi is a plus. :)
