New Senate contender

Via the Texas_Kos mailing list, I see that there's another contender for the Democratic nomination for Senate in 2006, Juan Garcia, a former Lt. Commander in the Navy from Corpus Christi. I'd heard of him before - Andrew D had mentioned him as a potential challenger to State Rep. Gene Seamon - but beyond that and the short biography that are currently on his page, I know nothing about him. I presume that he'll be making a trip to Houston sooner or later, and when he does I'll make an effort to meet him. In the meantime, Lt. Cmdr. Garcia or anyone from his campaign is welcomed and encouraged to drop me a note.

Now we need to start getting some folks interested in running for Lt. Governor, Comptroller, etc etc etc...

I don't meant to be snarky...

(well not over the top snarky, anyway)

-- why isn't his party affiliation indicated somewhere on his all-of-three-pages website?

--why all the flight suit photos? That would seem to me to be important if you had plans to declare victory in some future war...

--why is he licking his lips in one of the photos?

--and kissing his wife in front of a jet?

Is the sexual aspect of his campaign so critical to his campaign that he must both entice the females (and males, as Andrew helpfully pointed out) while at the same time remind them that he's married?

And heterosexual (because, as everyone knows, a wife and three children and a flight suit don't mean you're not gay)?

The sad part is he probably paid someone a nice fee to advise and design this website.

*shakes head*

Make that "declare premature victory in some future war"...

Mr. Garcia writes quite eloquently in a piece from 2002 on the duty of military officers to remain neutral in political matters, see this IP address -

But something about his webpage announcing his candidacy seems a bit dissonant with the aformentioned piece on political neutrality. Perhaps it is the fact that candidate Garcia's website has 6 photos of which 4 show him in uniform or the multiple references to Mr. Garcia as LCDR Garcia.

More disconcerting to me though is that although he's running for US Senate but does not have a statement on his core values, his vision, stands on any issues...just nebulous and meaningless statements on making "families a top priority" and "A new face, tested leadership, Texas values." The cynic in me senses that his policy stances will be firmed up once the focus groups are finished.

It is if he knows that he wants to be a politician but hasn't quite figured out how to articulate what he stands for. He needs to rectify that quickly. Right now he's an empty flight suit.

I and about a dozen San Antonio activists met with Juan about 10 days ago. He is definitely a Democrat and is on the right side re: women's issues, gays, fiscal and social responsibility, etc., etc. His website only went up two weekends ago. It's down right now and I suspect they are working on adding more content and putting his party affiliation. His campaign is only now getting off the ground.

He just has and is meeting with some national people who are really enthusiastic about the possibility of actually electing a blue senator in the reddist of red states.

We have to remember that this is TX and a military record with wartime experience counts here. He also related the fact it wasn't always easy being a Democrat in the flight ward room for those 13 years and that he felt like he made some converts during that time.
