It's Orlando!

Orlando Sanchez is ready for his closeup.

Harris County Republicans nominated Orlando Sanchez Monday to represent their party on the November ballot in the race for county treasurer.

The winner of the fall race will replace Jack Cato, who died May 22, but the office is somewhat uncertain since Harris County Commissioner's Court voted last week to abolish it.

Sanchez won 66 percent of 321 votes. Precinct chairs selected Sanchez during a special meeting at a Houston Community College campus, said Jared Woodfill, Harris County Republican Party Chair. "He has a lot of support among precinct chairmen and Republicans in general," Woodfill said.

"Most importantly, Orlando really, really needs the job," Woodfill did not add.

Sanchez will be opposed in November by Richard Garcia, a Democrat, who advocates abolishing the office. Abolishing the office would require a statewide vote on a constitutional amendment, which first must be approved by the state Legislature.

You know where I stand on this. Do you want to subsidize Orlando Sanchez, or do you want to save Harris County some money? The choice is yours.

Kinda sad, Orlando has been looking for a cush non-job job for years. Sounds like another ballot position for which I'll make no selection whatsoever. And that list gets longer and longer every year.

Do away with the office. Or on the other hand, at least this way we'll never hear from him again.

If you're going to interview Garcia after receiving this, consider adding the following questions. I am hoping that his campaign staff might be able to help him prepare some answers before the interview.

What experience do you have in shutting down businesses and/or departments?

Tell us about your past successes (in disbanding operations). What have you learned from your failures?

In general, how do you measure success during the process?

What is your plan of action with the Harris County Treasurer's office - the steps you plan on taking in the process in shutting down the office?

Do you anticipate county employment, such as Treasury Department Head or other appointed administrative position after you are successful? Would you consider such an offer if it was extended?

Thanks!
