Has anyone ever seen a team kick off from its own five-yard line before, as the Redskins were forced to do after a series of penalties in yesterday's game against the Colts? I can't say that I have. For that matter, on the previous attempt from their ten-yard line, I don't think I've ever seen a kickoff done as a punt, not counting post-safety free kicks. And since these things tend to come in threes, I can't recall the last time I saw a kicker/punter flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. Anybody else?

Posted by: Gritsforbreakfast on October 23, 2006 7:13 AMThe 2001 LSU-Auburn game in Baton Rouge comes to mind. In the previous visit, Auburn celebrated a victory with cigars on the field, so the LSU fans were primed for the game and heckling Auburn during warm-ups.
Auburn responded by coming out at pregame and stomping on the logo at midfield. Seeking to contain the teams early, the ref's flagged Auburn for unsportsman like conduct before the game even started. With the 15 yard penalty enforced LSU started the game with an on-side kick, which they recover and promptly took for a touchdown en route to a 27-14 victory.

Also in that game, the Auburn kicker (Duval?) decided he wanted to practice some placekicking a little during halftime....except the LSU band was still performing. He kept kicking right up until the bands horn section marched right past him and his holder. He took offense and confronted a band member. Most of the band held formation and kept marching but a few of the boys weren't taking any guff and a little fracas ensued during which the kicker and a trombone player and/or a saxiphonist got into it.
