Also noted by Houston Politics. I assume that once this happens, we will start to see some more formal interest in his Council seat. The only potential candidate of which I am aware is Sue Schecter. Bill King and Roy Morales had once been thought to be interested in that seat, but King has taken his ball and gone home, while Morales is running for Mayor, at least at this time. Perhaps a candidate will emerge from today’s Latino Summit, for which Peter Brown is one of the sponsors.
Perusing the list of his supporters on his website it does appear that indeed all the “chi-chi” liberal money is going to Peter Brown. Some of which probably would have gone to Annise Parker were Peter Brown not running. Which raises some questions, I suppose, about loyalties.
The Schlumberger connection may help raise the money but it isn’t going to guarantee votes. And in the end may actually work against him. Particularly with regard to his vote to condemn private property in the Galleria which benefitted his wife.
A lot will depend on who Bob Lanier endorses and who Greater Houston Partnership endorses and possibly on how large the African-American vote is. All indications so far is that Gene Locke will be our next mayor.
Somebody told me that the budget for the city’s public works department is being cut and some staff letting go. I asked Peter Brown at the Latino Summit how was the city’s economy. Peter told me the city has a surplus.
There was also the report that the city is only paying interest on the funds it has to contribute to retirement funds. If the city has surplus why is it not paying these retirement funds or cutting back on budgets, etc?
