Friday random ten: Songs of the Century, part 2

Continuing with songs in my collection from the Songs of the Century as compiled by the Recording Industry of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.

1. Take The ‘A’ Train – Duke Ellington (#17)
2. God Bless America – The Sun Harbor’s Chorus (#19, Kate Smith)
3. I Heard It Through The Grapevine – Marvin Gaye (#21)
4. I Want To Hold Your Hand – The Beatles (#28)
5. Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer – Ella Fitzgerald (#31, Gene Autry)
6. Swing Low Sweet Chariot – Eddie From Ohio (#35, Fisk Jubilee Singers)
7. Round Midnight – Charlie Parker (#37, Thelonius Monk)
8. Star Dust – The Hot Club of Cowtown (#40, Hoagy Carmichael)
9. Georgia On My Mind – Ray Charles (#42)
10. Every Breath You Take – The Police (#44)

I’m pretty sure that I’ve performed at least four of these songs before, three (“Take The ‘A’ Train”, “Round Midnight”, and “Star Dust”) in jazz band and one (“Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”) in concert choir. There’s a reason we call them “standards”.

Round 2 song report: Started with “Corn Dogs”, by The Bobs. Finished with “Elvis’ Rolls Royce”, by Was (Not Was), song #281, for a total of 94 this week. The last C song was “Cut It Away”, by Jackson Browne. The first D song was “Daddy And The Thief”, which is a Stereogum.com and team9.net mashup. The last D song was “Dynamite Walls”, by Hayden. The first E song was “E to the X”, which isn’t actually a song but a cheer by the Rice Marching Owl Band (MOB). If you want an actual song, the next item on the list is “E. T. Medley”, also by the MOB.
