Interview with CM Melissa Noriega

CM Melissa Noriega

Council Member Melissa Noriega was elected to finish the unexpired At Large #3 term of Shelley Sekula Gibbs in June of 2007, and has been re-elected for full terms twice since. She’s the chair of the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee on Council, a former HISD employee, and the wife of former State Rep. and 2008 Senate candidate Rick Noriega. She’s also one of my favorite people in government, and it’s always a pleasure to talk with her.

You can find a list of all interviews for this cycle, plus other related information, on my 2011 Elections page.

UPDATE: Since someone asked, let me make it clear that CM Noriega is running for re-election to her third full term. Her first re-election in 2007 was for her first full term; the unexpired portion of Sekula Gibbs’ term, for which she won a special election runoff in June, doesn’t count towards her term limits total.

Is there a reason the other candidates werent interviewed for this position? Thats great journalism.

  3. Perhaps you are unaware that I am not a paid journalist. I’m a blogger, and I do all of these interviews on my own time. If that is unsatisfactory to you, I invite you to start your own blog and do your own candidate interviews.

  4. East End Dem says:

Concerned did have her own blog, it was called “Seething Republican”. Welcome to the shrill world of Leticia Ablaza.

    Charles,

and a GREAT Blogger you are….whether I’m traveling or in town, you are a great source of info of what’s going on…..sometimes your posts are so detailed I wonder how you have the time to do this, lol

    Thanks

Robert – I agree – Charles does a GREAT job. He even lets me disagree with him.

  7. robert kane says:

Oh and I forgot to put that Melissa is my favorite person on Council too….I told her that when I met her one time and she seemed so taken back by that…

  8. Concerned says:

So being an unpaid journalist allows you to be irresponsible in presenting only one candidate for a race. I am okay with that. But I guess my questions is, why only this race did you leave out other candidates?

  9. Dude. There are 79 candidates for office in Houston, HISD, and HCC this year. When all is said and done I expect to have interviewed 48 of them. That’s a huge amount of my own free time, which I use as I see fit. If that’s not good enough for you, I have nothing further to say to you.

  10. East End Dem says:

Charles, I guarantee you “Concerned” is none other than Leticia Ablaza herself posting under that handle. You are just getting a taste of her caustic behavior. Her beef is that Melissa Noriega supported the historic designation and the no-name, no-chance opponent doesn’t. That is what is going on. I am sure she behaved herself long enough to get an interview, but if you want to see how she really acts, go to this city council tape, public speakers part 4 of 5, and slide it over to about the 20 minute mark. Shows her true colors. http://houstontx.city.swagit.com/player.php?refid=02152011-60

EastEndDem…I am no woman, but I was opposed to the way the Historic Designation went down. Ive always followed Kuff’s interviews and respect what he does, I just thought it was odd that this particular race there were no other interviews. I do think that one of the candidates that has run before may have a good chance at beating the current CM because of name recognition, and was really looking forward to see why he chose this race instead of At-Large 1 again. But by your response to this post, I feel that you sir, may actually be a current CM who has a grudge out for the lady running against you. Good luck on your race! Thank you Kuff for giving me an answer as to why you didnt make it through all of the candidates, keep up the good work.

  12. East End Dem says:

If you respect what Kuff does, you haven’t shown it in your comments at all. And no, not councilmember Rodriguez, but I do support him and councilmember Noriega. We need QUALIFIED people in those positions, not just people running because they are bitter over not getting their way on one issue.

  13. Concerned says:

I think challenging credible journalist is a display of respect. I dont beleive any of the candidates opposing CM Noriega is running because they didnt get their way on one issue, so that was a left field comment. The gentleman who has run before for Council seems like a genuine likeable guy. Havent really heard anything bad about him or the other guy, including not getting their way on an issue.
