"Money should NEVER stand in the way of health care"

I'm just going to reiterate the title of this post, and then urge you to follow the link to understand what it's about and maybe take action to help: Money should NEVER stand in the way of health care. Just ask yourself a question: Would you rather we as a society spent our money helping this woman treat her cancer, or would you rather we spent it raising her two orphaned kids later on? I think that's a pretty easy call to make, but then I'm just a soft-hearted liberal who doesn't like the idea of two more motherless children in the world. Thanks to The Bloggess on Twitter for the link.

This is probably not the case to make the point on, since treating this poor woman's cancer should not break the bank. However, I must disagree with the premise that money should NEVER stand in the way of health care. I believe very strongly that every citizen of the world's richest country deserves, as a basic right, affordable health care. Since American business has proven over and over that it will not provide affordable health care, then government should investigate the best way to ensure that every citizen receives healthcare.

Now, for this to be done, Americans must give up the notion that everything humanly possible must be done to save every life. Concurrent with the right of every US citizen to have his or her basic healthcare needs met 99% of the time, is the duty of every US citizen to concede that in 1% of the cases he or she will incur expenses that will exceed the capabilities of a national healthcare system. In those rare cases, assuming the individual does not carry private insurance, the state would attempt to provide comfort, but not extraordinary care.

If we are not willing to make a sacrifice in a small percentage of cases, we will never be able to afford a national healthcare system.

My apologies if this was an inappropriate time to broach the subject. I understand if you feel the need to disallow this comment.
