Pfizer shot approved for younger kids

Yes!

The Food and Drug Administration cleared the first coronavirus vaccine for emergency use in children as young as 12 on Monday, expanding access to the Pfizer-BioNTech shot to adolescents ahead of the next school year and marking another milestone in the nation’s battle with the virus.

The decision that the two-shot regimen is safe and effective for younger adolescents had been highly anticipated by many parents and pediatricians, particularly with the growing gap between what vaccinated and unvaccinated people may do safely. Evidence suggests that schools can function at low risk with prevention measures, such as masks and social distancing. But vaccines are poised to increase confidence in resuming in-person activities and are regarded as pivotal to returning to normalcy.

“Adolescents, especially, have suffered tremendously from the covid pandemic. Even though they’re less likely than adults to be hospitalized or have severe illness, their lives really have been curtailed in many parts of the country,” said Kawsar R. Talaat, an assistant professor of international health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “A vaccine gives them an extra layer of protection and allows them to go back to being kids.”

Expert advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are scheduled to meet Wednesday to recommend how the vaccine should be used in that age group, and the vaccine can be administered as soon as the CDC director signs off on the recommendation.

In a news briefing Monday evening after the announcement, FDA officials said the Pfizer authorization for 12- to 15-year-olds was a straightforward decision because the data showed that the vaccine was safe and that the response to the vaccine was even better than among the 18- to 25-year-olds who got the shots.

Our almost-17-year-old has had her shots. We’ll be getting the 14-year-old signed up as soon as we can. “Herd immunity” may never be a thing we achieve with COVID, but having a greater share of the population vaxed is a good thing, and adding this group to the eligible list moves towards that goal. I’m ready for this.

I have looked at The Science (not that stuff in the hate based media such as CNN or ABC) and not that political stuff from the CDC that thinks that we are still hiding in bunkers and wear a mask just to look out the window. I would urge caution in the mass vaccination campaign.

Specifically: “As mass vaccination campaigns have started in the vulnerable population, not only vaccinated subjects but also not yet vaccinated younger age groups will become a breeding ground for new infectious variants. There
can be no doubt that continued mass vaccination campaigns will enable new, more infectious viral variants to become increasingly dominant and ultimately result in a dramatic incline in new cases despite enhanced vaccine coverage rates. There can be no doubt either that this situation will soon lead to complete resistance of circulating variants to the current vaccines. This is certainly not what would be expected by those who claim that enhanced and accelerated mass vaccination is going to diminish circulation of new dominant
variants and will, therefore, further reduce viral infection rates and flatten morbidity and mortality curves. ”

I urge all people to do your own research into The Science, and also consult your family doctor and pediatrician. I know that the Surgeon General, Dr. Jill Biden, will say otherwise, but these are politicians. I don’t trust the Science of Pres. Biden. He’ll be in his lab, saying “Not a joke. Get the shot.” But he’s not doing any studies in the lab.

Trust the Science. Read the Science, not Washington Post.

I also forgot to add, that, if the vaccination numbers and the recovered cases are accurate, then we’ve achieved herd immunity. In all past pandemics and epidemics herd immunity came without a vaccine. Again, that’s The Science.

Herd immunity doesn’t mean “Covid zero.” This illness will probably be around similar to other respiratory viruses, colds, influenza. For most who get it, a nuisance not a crisis. Perhaps mainly seasonal.

“ In all past pandemics and epidemics herd immunity came without a vaccine. Again, that’s The Science.”

Right, because smallpox would have totally receded on its own without that effort to vaccinate people against it. I’d rather get herd immunity the easy way (via vaccination) than the hard way (mass infections and millions of preventable deaths/permanent disability).

You sound like a mouthpiece for that crackpot Bossche. I’ll stick with the vaccines that kept me from getting smallpox, polio, measles, and tetanus, and at worst would have me getting a mild case of Covid 19- the science with an actual track record of success.

Dr. Hochman, someone at some point is going to sue you for medical malpractice.

  5. Jason Hochman says:

Flypusher, I agree with achieving herd immunity through vaccination is much less painful, however, we can’t allow crackpots such as the WHO to redefine herd immunity to state that it only comes from vaccination. The public deserves to know the truth.

I am not a mouthpiece at all. I simply urge everyone to do their own research, consult their own doctor, and make the best choice as to when/if to get vaccinated, rather than letting the TV set make the decision. If you feel that getting the Covid 19 vaccine is best for you, then get it.

You see, unlike the righteous progressive mindset that wants to virtue signal and attempt to force its choices onto everyone else, and censor all debate, I still believe in personal responsibility and doing your own research to make your own choices. You may recall that I was one of the first to call for mask wearing when they said that asymptomatic spread was possible, but then when the Science showed that masks have little or no efficacy, I was one of the first to call for an end to all mask wearing laws.

Jason: “I still believe in personal responsibility and doing your own research to make your own choices. ”

this might carry more weight if you or your ilk had any inkling what it means to “do research.” reading stuff you found on the internet ain’t it.

hint: those people you call “crackpots” have the funds, the bandwidth, and the expertise to “do research.” you and your army of “individuals” do not. research is a team sport, and an expensive one.

(your so-called “personal responsibility” is just a Libertarian/Q euphemism for “not responsible to the community”.)

  7. Jason Hochman says:

Joel, like I said the progressive mind wants to tell everyone what to do…

You can read all of the stuff you need on the Internet. Did you know, you can go to Pub Med, and look up journal articles, and most journals have papers posted online? Did you know you can email the researchers directly? You can go to USA spending dot gov, and see all of the projects the federal government has funded.

I see that you are unable to do research and to look up the Science. You are brainwashed by the hate filled media, and the DNC which is an outpouring of hate. You are a conspiracy theorist…believing that it’s all Q behind everything, unless of course it’s Trumps fault. Personal responsibility, they tell you, is bad, just be a victim. Just blame someone else.

Your ilk fell for that. Blamed it all on Trump. But as Joe Biden found out, it’s easy to sit back and blame someone, but these are complex problems. Now look. We have violence in the Middle East, tension with Russia, Iran growing in power, mass shootings every day, violent crime rising out of control, gas shortages, stagflation. All of that though can help to distract us from the border crisis, the kids in cages, and now I hear Biden might even build some of the Trump Wall. Not to mention race relations set back to the days of Jim Eagle. Also, please explain to me how the progressives can support drive through voting, when driving is causing the environmental crisis that will destroy us?

Biden’s regime has NO empathy. I saw his Sec. of Energy grinning away as she said that the gas shortage wouldn’t bother you if you were rich and had an electric car. They don’t care about working people. The housekeeper who needs gas to get to her 10 dollar an hour job, in her battered old mini van.

Things are just going down hill fast, and this is all because your ilk believed all kinds of crazy stuff. Now just look.

  8. C.L. says:

Dr. Hochman, what do you think of this ?

Seems it’s not only ‘progressive minds’ who want to tell everyone what to do, it’s the Conservative minds as well.

  9. Joel says:

Jason: “Joel, like I said the progressive mind wants to tell everyone what to do…
You can read all of the stuff you need on the Internet. ”

he says, telling me what to do.

“All of that though can help to distract us from the border crisis, the kids in cages,”

i’m sure they are all grateful that Biden won the election, so that people like you would notice that this is a problem. the only thing worse than an ignoramus is a sanctimonious ignoramus.

“Things are just going down hill fast, and this is all because your ilk believed all kinds of crazy stuff. ”

    project much? rubber, glue.

if you just noticed how bad things are, that says all that needs saying about your “research.”
