Friday random ten: The 90s

The 90s. Grunge. Dot coms. “I did not have sex with that woman”. You remember, right? It wasn’t that long ago.

1. Suicide Blonde – INXS (1990)
2. Something To Talk About – Bonnie Raitt (1991)
3. I Touch Myself – Divinyls (1992)
4. Go – Pearl Jam (1993)
5. Hallelujah – Jeff Buckley (1994)
6. Wonderwall – Oasis (1995)
7. Hell – Squirrel Nut Zippers (1996)
8. Tubthumping – Chumbawamba (1997)
9. Who Needs Sleep? – Barenaked Ladies (1998)
10. Steal My Sunshine – LEN (1999)

I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to get a decent song-per-year list, as iTunes often grabs info from “greatest hits” and other retrospectives or re-packages, which can play havoc with song data. But this is a pretty good list. We’ll see if I can achieve the same for the 2000s entry.

As with the 80s, I don’t think you can distill the 90s into a single video. Hell, I think we’re still trying to figure out what the 90s were really all about. I haven’t seen nearly as much pop culture nostalgia for it as I have for other decades, at least not as yet. But if I were to try to encapsulate the 90s, I’d start with something like this:

I hope that doesn’t disappoint you.

Entire song list report: Started with “Words”, by Neil Young. Finished with “You’re A Mean One, Mister Grinch”, by the Asylum Street Spankers. I have three versions of this, the others being by Michael Gaither, and by Trish Murphy. I don’t know how many versions of this song there are, but whatever it is it’s not enough. It’s too much fun to sing. It’s also song #6229, for 99 songs this week and 88 to go till we reach the end of the first leg. I do believe I can make that happen next week. The last W song was “Written In Reverse”, by Spoon. The first Y song was “Y Control” by Baron von Luxxury. In between were the three X songs: “X Offender”, by Blondie; “Xmas In Jail”, by Asleep At The Wheel; and “Xmas Time For Visa”, by the Austin Lounge Lizards. On to the home stretch!
