KLOL changes format

Damn. Did anyone see this coming?

KLOL, 101.1 FM announced Friday that station has changed formats. The station switched from a rock format to a Latino music format branded as Mega 101.

The station’s web site was listed as under construction, but KLOL’s former morning show hosts Walton and Johnson announced on their web site that they were informed Thursday night of the change.

The radio hosts stated on WaltonandJohnson.com that, “Thursday night Walton and Johnson were informed by lower-level management sources via a last-minute phone call that there would be no Walton and Johnson Show tomorrow. In its place would be Hispanic music programs.”

Walton and Johnson were the #7 rated morning show in the latest ratings. I’m happy to see them go since I think they’re a couple of crapmeisters, but I’m shocked it happened like this.

What this means is that there’s no rock station in Houston which isn’t limited to a time period. You’ve got your Oldies Rock on 107.5, your Classic Rock on 93.7,and your Alternative Rock on 94.5, but no one station that might play anything from the Beatles and Cream to Collective Soul and Green Day, which KLOL used to do. If there’s a better definition of “vast radio wasteland” than that, I don’t know what it is.

Found via Metroblogging Houston.

UPDATE: Various KLOL fans have found this old post and are expressing their angst over the format change. Google’s cache still has the old KLOL web page in it. This discussion thread was complaining about KLOL’s format – one can perhaps see how a change might have been in the works, though clearly what they got was not what they were asking for. I hope Ken Hoffman and.or John Nova Lomax has something to say about why this happened soon.

UPDATE: Pete piles on. Jim D wails. Michael finds a scapegoat. Callie has some words from Walton and Johnson. Kevin examines his non-FM options.

    Two quick things:

For all of those who want to get back at Clear Channel by switching to XM, please do your research. Clear Channel is a major investor in XM. Sirius is backed by Ford and Daimler Chyrsler, BTW.

Secondly, Chuck, have you ever had 100 comments before? If not, you do now.

I need my rock and roll!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Stephen says:

THIS IS WHY I AM NOW ON SIRIUS SATTELITE!

This is an outrage! I couldn’t believe my ears when I woke up this morning. I spent probably 10 minutes adjusting the dial on my clock radio trying to tune in Walton & Johnson before I accepted what had happened. Fourteen Latino stations weren’t enough? Where is the logic in destroying the only bastion of comprehensive rock music in this great city? Rock 101 has been a staple of the Houston airwaves with a proud 34 year tradition. I’ve grown up listening to 101. Nearly every new rock song I’ve heard on the radio has come from that station. There is a sudden and unexpected void in my life now that is comparable to the death of a loved one. Where now will I turn for my music? There is nowhere that can compare. Meanwhile Latinos now have fifteen choices instead of fourteen. This is clearly a racist move. I have nothing against Latinos, and my anger is not directed towards them. If Clear Channel wanted to try to get a bigger piece of the pie of Hispanic listeners, why would it dismantle the only station in the city like Rock 101, forsaking it’s many listeners and employees. They could have destroyed any number of lesser stations to accoplish this. No this is, without a doubt, a response by the liberal media (Clear Channel being a member) to the increase in the conservative Hispanic vote. Squelching conservative voices like Walton & Johnson is a cheap ploy to accomplish that end and it will not work. The way this was done, without warning, lacks any semblance of class. Shame on Clear channel.

  5. Alex says:

Their format was like a confortable chair, maybe a little ratty looking but part of the house anyway. Clear Channel will never bring them back. I imagin they will reflect when executives at CC are replaced with automated executives or offshore concepts. After 25 years of listening I have outgrown the content but not the FREEDOM to say what they did as local Houstonians. I guess the content for the new program will come from mexico after all it is cheaper that way.

  6. Accordion_Smasher says:

I agree with all of you except Latina. Surprise, suprise… sombody calling herself “Latina” has no problem with the change. She obviously has a larger bank account than most hard workong Houstonians who can’t fit satalite radio into there budget or as she suggests: buying all the CDs from all the various artist who we heard on 101. I hate that crappy music Hispanics listen to and now I hate Clear Channel. If I decide to spring for satalite, you can rest assured it will NOT be XM.

  7. Clint says:

KLOL was the longest running runnning rock station in History. I am unbelievably pissed the F&%$ off that the a$$holes at CC, changed the format to tejano.
I am not a racist and I have latino friends, but there are enough latino, tejano, chicano, or whatever stations in houston and there are not enough rock stations. Hell they all play the same music anyway.
Did everyone know that the a$$hole cc executive who made the decision to change the format was a latino. Coincidence? If the tables were turned and if it had been a white guy who changed to a rock station from a latino station, he would be called a racist.
Everyone loved rock 101, white, black, hispanic, chinese, indian, and I am sure that there are some hispanics that were pissed off about the change too.
I hate this I really do. I feel so sorry for Dave, Wendy, Locke, Nasty, Fix, walton, johnson and all the other great personalities who made our days a little better with good humored fun, and ball bustin rock.
If any of you out there plan a riot, or a rally to take back the rock, let me know, I will be there with bells on.

LONG LIVE KLOL AND LONG LIVE ROCK

  8. Melissa says:

I was SO HAPPY to hear Wendy Miller’s voice on the radio this morning – she’s now on 94.5 The Buzz from 10 am to 3 pm! Apparently 94.5 is changing their play list a bit to include some of the KLOL stuff. I listened today and it wasn’t too bad. Wendy said they’re also going to do Mandatory Metallica on week nights! But I really miss Outlaw Dave and Loch – any word on what they’re doing now?

  9. Angi says:

Bring Rock 101.1 Back! Screw the latino crap.

  10. Kent says:

The Houston area has 16 different Latino stations, if Clear Channel wanted to create another one, fine, but they had no reason to eliminate a rock and roll icon from the air ways. KLOL had a large and loyal fan base and was evidently doing well finacially (thats all the bean counters at Clear Channel care about anyway). Any way you look at it this shows contempt for our city and our demographic so we (KLOL listeners) should hit them where it hurts by complaining to or boycotting the sponsors of CLEAR Channel stations in the Houston area

  11. James edison says:

I am amazed at how stupid a company can be. I work in the industry in Houston and have grown up on the solid Rock of Houston formerly known as KLOL. I was amazed when they fired Pruett, Grego and the Boner. But remember when they did that they were real shady, they just took them off the air just like they did our rock-n-roll. Now dont get me wrong, I hated the new morning show with a passion, they were really a bunch of self rightous idiots, but I loved that station and think that Clear Channel upper management needs to step in and see how much the middle management guys screwed up this time… By the way, middle management is who got rid of the old morning show and almost got sued so they hired them back in Dallas and then screwed them again by pulling the plug on the format they were on there.

What screwed the people of Houston out of good radio was the FCC allowing these huge companys to own multiple stations in one demographic, now they have a monopoly on the market and ‘We’ the people, eventhough we own the air waves cant do anything about it!

    Clown Shoes

  12. D. J. Triple G. says:

Listen everybody! I’m sorry for those who feel abandoned with the absence of Rock 101. I appreciate 80s metal, but that station was in the tank when they started to play Creed and Alice In Chains. They might as well have added Matchbox 20…..never mind that is reserved for Mix 96.5 Anyway I am glad that Mega 101 has taken over. Orbita 100.7 was a recent casualty at the expense of Univision Radio and now Mega 101 took over at the best possible time. Like I said earlier, I am sorry for the Rock 101 fans, but don’t make borderline racist comments to defend the situation. I am Cuban not Mexican or Central American, so I appreciate a fresh station that plays Caribbean-influenced hip-hop, salsa remixes and Spanish club music without the Spanish love songs, Tejano, Norteño, bachata and 80s style Spanish rock. Yes there are a half dozen Spanish language F. M. stations, but they each serve different segments of the Hispanic community. Did African-Americans have to settle for Majic and the Boxx – no, that’s why Power 97.5 and Party 104.9 emerged. So, once again, I hope another station emerges to absorb the loss of Rock 101, but don’t blame the Latino MAJORITY for the loss! Salsa and Spanish Hip-Hop does not equal Tejano/Norteño/Cumbia…..all Latinos do not share the same musical tastes, just like all Anglos, African-Americans and Asians don’t!!!!!

  13. MKDM says:

Screw Walton & Johnson!!! They are Republican Crap Rock. Have you traitors forgotten Stevens and Pruett? They are the real Houston Radio Gawds!! Nevertheless, the Runaway Radio was the real staple in Houston. 34 years down the drain.

I moved to Houston 15 yrs ago and 101 was like a new friend. It was a good rock station and played some fine rock tunes most of the time. The morning show was never good after Stevens and Pruitt but i was always thinking they could do much better for a replacment. So its the old 18-34 demo they want. But we have more money and spend it more wisely…….screw Clear Channel…….we will see………Rock on !

  17. Kathy says:

I cannot believe that we really need another Hispanic station in Houston. Is this still America, or Tijuana? I grew up listening to KLOL, and am very saddened to see it go. I want to know what the listeners can do to get our Rock 101 back!

  18. Steve says:

I hated 101 klol. Grew up with it, now hate it!
The damn djs reminded me of white redneck hippies with long dirty hair, tatoos, and fast cars that they work on in thier yard daily. They also remind me of people who love waylon jennings and jethro tull and are truly of the stoner age and need to be laid to rest. I dont agree with the format as I really miss the old 107.5 krqt the rocket. but hey good things never last.
so good riidance 101 and all you redneck, confederate flag wearing, bandana, hat on backwards, white bred, marijuana smoking hippies!
    Whoo Hooo!
    Change is good!!!!!!!!!

  19. Michele Townsend says:

No more KLOL??!!! Jesus F***** Christ!!!!! We should all move now!! Clear Channel can kiss my ass!! To leave the KLOL staff, especially Outlaw Dave(Dave Andrews),jobless right before the holidays is chicken shit corporate politics!! As if we needed more tejano crap on the airwaves. Did I fall asleep and suddenly wake up in Tijuana?? I thought this was Houston, home of Houston’s Rock 101, apparently not. As a native Houstonian and listener for 15 years I am enraged!!!! The station was as old as me. What a sad time for us listeners and fans, but especially our beloved Rock Jocks!! Outlaw Dave we wish you well and we all know that no matter where you end up, you will still be the coolest you have always been!!! To me you are a ROCKSTAR!!!!

  21. D. J. Triple G. says:

For the last time…..the new format is not Tejano. I don’t listen to Tejano, part of which I like this new station. Nothing against Tejano, but it’s not my music. I now hope another station emerges so I can avoid reading the hypocrisy, racism and stereotypical comments. I listen to all formats, I wish I could go see Metallica tomorrow, but I’m also glad to hear Celia Cruz and El Gran Combo during the week instead of just on Friday and Saturday nights. By the way they are Salsa not Tejano!
Here is a chart – please follow along:
    93.3 Norteño (Univision Radio)
    102.9 Tejano (Univision Radio)
104.9 Black and some Hispanic Hip-Hop (Univision Radio)
106.5 Spanish Love songs with some Pop and Rock (Univision Radio)
107.9 Spanish Rock, Pop, Love songs (Liberman Broadcasting)
    and now
101.1 Spanish hip-hop, reggae, salsa and merengue remixes, pop and some Spanish rock.
Now tell me it’s Tejano – I don’t think so!
Rest in Peace Rock 101, Bienvenidos Mega 101!!!!!

  22. Josh says:

I just have one simple quote.

“Rock ‘an roll aint noise pollution… rock and roll aint gonna die…”

All you loyal listeners, this is our time. This is our time to stand up and fight for what we want and what we believe. If you wanna stand up to CC find their studio, get some poster boards, something to hold those signs up high and dont stop. Encourage your friends to do so. EVERYONE needs to get in on this, this isn’t just some stupid rock station they flipped over, this is us, this will always be us, this will never change. Not one of us who has listend to KLOL will ever forget the joy that this radio station has given us. They aren’t just DJ’s, they’re our family. They’re the ones that make our trips home bearable, what make our parties.. parties. So I say to you Houstonians. Fight them. Fight them hard, fight them long, fight them till they cant fight no more. Keep up the fight, for if you don’t you’re letting them win. Don’t buy a damn thing they try to sell you, don’t buy XM radio, email Clear Chanel, call clear channel, tell your friends, tell them to tell theirs. We CAN fight this we WILL fight this and I don’t care if I’m the only one out there, I will personally protest this alone if I have to. I will find out where the studio is and post my cell phone number later if you want to get ahold of me and come on over. Keep up the fight guys, it might do some good. But if it doesn’t, at least we’re trying.

  23. ClearChannelSux says:

I find it ironic that last “Steve” guy exposes his own ignorance by making sweeping generalizations and overtly racist stereotypes about all rock listeners. Why is it okay for non-white people to express intolerance of others. I’ve listened to 101 my whole life and I don’t fit a single one of your descriptions of rock listeners. We are not the haters, but you are.

  24. Amanda says:

Its a sad day in Houston when they take away our only Rock station and change it to yet another Latino station. What were they thinking. I am furious and agree with Lindsey we need to do something and let them know how we feel

  25. Hey Joe says:

god damn what the hell is this. I had no idea of a change until friday and i thought my radio was broken or something. I mean mandatory metallica, 420 rock block, zeppelin, and all that. The Kurt Cobain memorial. WHat the hell is CC thinking? There is no more good stations in houston except for 93.7 or so. This also will bring down CC’s ratings considering there are enuf latino shit around without killing a great rock station.

  26. C.W. says:

What several of you are saying about contacting Clear Channel is a reat idea. I was just at the corporate website (http://www.clearchannel.com) and noted they had email address for general and the radio P.R. Dude (Omar Thompson [email protected]). I was going to call him in the morning, but decided against using his direct line. Think I’ll use the corporate H.Q. direct line there in San Antonio (210-822-2828)I will assume that the new Klol does not have it’s sponsors lined up yet, or else they are just waiting on the furor to die down (10,000 songs??? Give me a break!!!) Over 5,000 of you have signed the local petition electronically, if you are over 18 years of age, please take a few minutes to contact (call would be best Clear Channel Corporate tomorrow. They have already discarded us as listeners and could care less about how we 5,000 feel. Hopefully 5,000 phone calls over the next few days will let them know. By the way, the other Clear Channel FM stations in this market are KHMX 96.5, KKRW 93.7, KODA 99.1, KTBZ 94.5, I just removed all of them from my radio presets, and will definately tuning into the new Klol in a few weeks to find out who the new sponsors are so i can call them with my opinions on what stations they sponsor as well.
Good luck to our friends Walton, Johnson, Outlaw Dave, & Wendy, we’ll miss you. LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL!!!!!!!! ‘Stingray’

  29. I think that this is a big pile of crap too. There is enough mexicans and as well mexican stations in this town we beat Santa Anna and we can beat them again so they need to put you guys back on the air cause this just aint right thanks hope this helps guys.

  30. matt says:

SCREW CLEAR CHANNEL. THEY SUCK HARD. BRING BACK THE ONLY REAL HOUSTON ROCK STATION ROCK 101. THERE ARE ALREADY TOO MANY LATIO STATIONS ON THE AIR

  31. Carol says:

I can’t believe this crap, oh great another mexican station. Get that crap off the air and bring back the radio gods PLEASE.

  32. DAVID J says:

I WANT CLEAR CHANNEL TO KNOW THAT THERE IS ALOT OF PISSED OFF PEOPLE IN HOUSTON.HOW COULD YOU TAKE THEM OFF THE AIR.THE STATION WAS ON THE AIR FOR 34 YEARS PLUS AND YOU PECKERHEADS TAKE THEM OFF THE AIR THATS BULL.WHAT ABOUT OUTLAW DAVE THAT WAS THERE OVER 10 YEARS AND THE REST OF THE CREW,BRING THE CREW BACK OR CLEAR CHANNEL HAS JUST LOST ALOT OF LISTENERS!

  33. Eddie says:

Does it seem funny to anyone else that Clear Channel is based in San Antonio and they keep changing formats to mexican music? What a drag. I just turned 40 and I remember 101 from the times of hanging out with my big sister. Been a loyal listener ever since I can remember. If there is something we can do, than we really should be doing it. Their taking over the air waves and it sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! E.H.

  34. Randy says:

Got news for you W&J got their start from S&P. So what if they were Republican. They were better morning show than the laughing goof-balls on the buzz or any other station. People like JAYE need to wake up and take their heads out from between their legs; she is the kind of person that makes Houston traffic suck also! Kind of hard to see with your head up there, especially while driving. All thats left now is bubble-gum on the rest of the stations.

  35. mike says:

I am a 21 year old college student. i learned to drive while listening to 101. i worked out in football to 101. i bonded with my dad to 101. if there is anything i can do to get 101 back on the air, i will be there. good music was hard to find in houston to begin with. i only wish the people who made this decision had the balls to step up and not sneak around and take it from us in the middle of the night. f-ing pussys
