Friday random ten: Songs of the Century, part 4

Continuing with songs in my collection from the Songs of the Century as compiled by the Recording Industry of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.

1. Summertime – The MOB (#74, Sidney Bechet)
2. Theme from “Shaft” – The MOB (#75, Isaac Hayes)
3. The Sounds of Silence – Simon and Garfunkel (#79)
4. Smells Like Teen Spirit – Tori Amos (#80, Nirvana)
5. It Had To Be You – Harry Connick (#81, Isham Jones Orchestra)
6. Minnie The Moocher – The Cotton Club/Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (#82, Cab Calloway)
7. What A Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong (#84)
8. Fire and Rain – James Taylor (#85)
9. YMCA – The Village People (#86)
10. King Of The Road – Roger Miller (#88)

The MOB sure is a presence on these lists, isn’t it? We have arrangements of “Minnie The Moocher” and “YMCA”, too, plus eight of the songs on the first three lists. Not too shabby.

Round 2 report: Started with “Gravitate To Me”, by The The. Ended with “Highway Star”, by Deep Purple, song 445, for 72 tunes this week. The last G song was “A Gypsy’s Kiss”, by Deep Purple. The first H song was “Hail Brittania/When I’m 64”, by The MOB.
