Weekend link dump for March 29

“Copper is antimicrobial. It kills bacteria and viruses, sometimes within minutes. In the 19th century, exposure to copper would have been an early version of constantly sanitizing one’s hands. Since then, studies have shown that copper is able to destroy the microbes that most threaten our lives. It has been shown to kill a long list of microbes, including norovirus, MRSA, a staph bacteria that has become resistant to antibiotics, virulent strains of E. coli that cause food-borne illness, and coronaviruses—possibly including the novel strain currently causing the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Joe Biden and his platform are a lot more progressive than you might think.

“In a time when there are no sports to bet on due to the coronavirus pandemic, Bovada gamblers are wagering en masse on HBO’s Westworld Season 3″.

Great article about Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the best of the Treks.

Yeah, I don’t have much hope that the 2020 Olympics will happen. And indeed, they’re gonna be postponed, maybe till 2021.

“So how much would this cost? The calculation is fairly simple: Since a drop in annual GDP of 7.5% is well within the realm of possibility, and since unemployment compensation typically amounts to a little more than half of what workers normally earn, they believe the cost to the government would be around 3.75 % GDP. In other words—a lot.”

“We have arrived at a situation in which critical care for the gravely ill and dying is directly at odds with testing at scale. The problem is there’s simply no way to stabilize the situation and get through the coming months without testing at scale or more specifically testing for the purposes of surveillance.”

“I think we will discover our destiny was to serve as a bridge between the old and the new rather than a force in our own right. We’re here to keep the porridge from getting too hot or cold. For the next twenty years or so, Gen X will have the most power in the country, but we’ll be living in a world we hardly recognize. It’s a big responsibility, it’s not what we expected, but I think we’re up to the challenge.”

“The failures of the government’s response to the coronavirus crisis can be traced directly to some of the toxic fantasies now dear to the Republican Party.”

“And now for a little heartwarming example of how shared hatred can unite total strangers while raising some much-needed coin for the less fortunate. Comedian and former Gilmore Girls producer, Kevin T. Porter, started an initiative on Friday that thousands of others have been getting behind. He shared a tweet with his followers, stating that he would be donating money to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank––with a catch. Everybody who had a story about Ellen DeGeneres being a big old meanie should tweet him––and for every story he received, he’d match it with $2. Who says a global disaster can’t bring people together?”

“People say Contagion is prescient. We just saw the science. The whole epidemiological community has been warning everybody for the past 10 or 15 years that it wasn’t a question of whether we were going to have a pandemic like this. It was simply when. It’s really hard to get people to listen. I mean, Trump pushed out the admiral on the National Security Council, who was the only person at that level who’s responsible for pandemic defense. With him went his entire downline of employees and staff and relationships. And then Trump removed the [early warning] funding for countries around the world.”

“Plenty of American workers aren’t being told to work remotely—even though they could.”

“The coronavirus is not mutating significantly as it circulates through the human population, according to scientists who are closely studying the novel pathogen’s genetic code. That relative stability suggests the virus is less likely to become more or less dangerous as it spreads, and represents encouraging news for researchers hoping to create a long-lasting vaccine.”

“What do state and federal laws say about quarantines? And what happens if you break them?”

“Twitter temporarily locked the account of The Federalist Wednesday after the conservative opinion site published a piece, written by a dermatologist based in Oregon, that proposed the deliberate spread of the coronavirus in order to boost immunity to the disease.” An unlicensed dermatologist, by the way, so you can be sure he’s the expert we’ve been waiting for.

RIP, Manu Dibango, Afro-Funk saxophonist.

RIP, Fred “Curly” Neal, legendary member of the Harlem Globetrotters.

RIP, Jimmy Wynn, former MLB player with the Astros and Dodgers and other teams, known as The Toy Cannon.

“At the Department of Veterans Affairs, workers are scrambling to order medical supplies on Amazon after its leaders, lacking experience in disaster responses, failed to prepare for the onslaught of patients at its medical centers.”

“At the same time, estimating that R0 has increased from 2.5 to 3.1 is . . . very, very bad. It means that on average, every infected person infects three other people, not 2.5 other people—which makes the spread of the virus much wider and faster. Without any control measures, for example, it means that after ten generations a single person will be responsible for 80,000 infections instead of 10,000 infections.”

Don’t vote for assholes.

Hey, remember all those spring breakers in Florida? Know where they went afterwards? Everywhere. Better hope none of them brought a bug home with them.

RIP, Bubbha Thomas, renowned Houston jazz musician and educator.

Uplifting news: NY doc successfully treats 699 out of 699 Wu flu patients with Hydroxychloroquine Sulfate, Zinc and Z-Pak.

Lies and the lying liars who tell them.

  3. Jules says:

Trump just extended social distancing thru April 30, but he probably doesn’t have the resources that Bill does.

  4. Brad says:

Have you seen the ratings that Trump says he has been getting in his Goebbels-esque press briefings?!…better than MNF. So proud.

  5. Manny says:

Bill either you like to lie, because it is natural to you, or you just believe anything that corresponds with what you want to believe, either way you are dangerous person.

    https://www.recordonline.com/news/20200324/kiryas-joel-leaders-urge-doctor-to-stop-making-videos-about-kj-virus-cases

  6. Bill Daniels says:

    Manny,

Did you even bother to read your own article?

“The unusual public plea from the village’s main congregation, health center and other organizations came after Dr. Vladimir Zelenko recorded at least seven videos, including one that predicted a rampant spread of COVID-19 in Kiryas Joel and another that led Fox News host Sean Hannity to invoke the community on his radio and TV shows on Monday.
“We the undersigned institutions strongly believe that the predictions presented by Dr. Zelenko have been proven false and are not supported by the overall medical establishment, specifically in his wild conclusions as to the spread of the virus in our community,” the letter writers stated.”

The Jews in the Dr.’s community are upset that he predicted that the virus would spread virulently through the community. The were afraid that would cause discrimination against them, as people fear coming in contact with the infected. Nowhere in the article did they dispute the doc’s claim that he had successfully treated almost 700 people with the Trump cocktail. Not once. Never mentioned.

On a side note, isn’t it interesting that the whole peanut gallery here seems very upset and angry to hear about any possible good news. Good news is upsetting to you. NO, IT MUST BE LIES! LIES! Think about that. You folks WANT this virus to continue and want it to take down people, the economy, anything it takes, because you think this will get rid of Trump. Wow. This is a new low for some of you, who I often disagreed with politically, but still respected.

  7. Manny says:

Bill you are dangerous, even worse then Trump, why not place the relevant part.

We the undersigned institutions strongly believe that the predictions presented by Dr. Zelenko have been proven false and are not supported by the overall medical establishment, specifically in his wild conclusions as to the spread of the virus in our community,” the letter writers stated.

They said those statements had spurred discrimination against its residents and made it difficult to staff local businesses that remain open during the state emergency. Zelenko had estimated 90 percent of Kiryas Joel had COVID-19 after 9 of his first 14 tests came back positive – a conclusion the Orange County health commissioner blasted as irresponsible.

Hannity is a college dropout who is making millions by spreading lies, you are a liar and a danger to people who fall for your stupid claims.

    From another article

“Also of note: As of last Thursday, Orange County, where both Kiryas Joel and Monroe are located, had officially reported a total of 68 positive cases of coronavirus. Zelenko, however, claims that he has treated 350 coronavirus patients from Kiryas Joel alone and nearly 150 more from nearby areas. Despite these red flags, Hannity read off the exact dosage and treatment durations that Zelenko claims has stopped the disease in his conversation with the head of the nation’s coronavirus task force, Vice President Mike Pence.”

He has cured more people than had tested positive, really Bill or whatever your name is, you need to stop your lying. You like Trump have blood on your hands.

  8. voter_worker says:

Bill, you’re a prisoner of your carefully-cultivated “Bad Boy of Off the Kuff” persona. If I had never before read anything from you, tonight’s posts by themselves would have made me think you’re either illiterate since you don’t seem to know the actual name of the disease being discussed, or simply a nut-case masquerading as a troll. This isn’t a side note, it’s your M. O. People here know that your apparent sole motivation in posting is to be an agent provocateur who can own the libs. If you were actually interested in posting “possible good news” you would have worked harder on your links and stifled your obsession of pissing people off. If this ends up being good news it won’t be because you touted it here tonight.

  9. SocraticGadfly says:

Uhh, cheesy special effects and all, NOTHING tops the original Star Trek.

  10. SocraticGadfly says:

The likes of Bill Daniels is why my blog will stay on moderated comments.

  11. SocraticGadfly says:

Quarantines? The gummint can shut churches as long as its done equally.

    Sez who?

Via my blog, the Mormons, among others.

  12. Bill Daniels says:

FDA gives emergency authorization for hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine to be used as treatment for the Wuhan virus.

    https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/29/fda-emergency-authorization-anti-malaria-drug-155095

On an unrelated note, Socratic is right about at least one thing….Star Trek, TOS is hands down the best version. As to the rest, I perused his blog. LOL! No one comments on his posts. Must be pretty easy to moderate when no one replies to anything. I imagine Socratic sitting at his computer, like Charlie Brown at the mailbox on Valentine’s Day, waiting forlornly for comments that will never come.

  13. Bill Daniels says:

The Italians are apparently in on the ‘big lie,’ too:

    https://www.trustnodes.com/2020/03/29/italy-finally-starts-mass-treatment-with-hydroxychloroquine

“Doctors in Italy have finally began widely prescribing hydroxychloroquine in certain combinations in Rome and the wider region of Lazio with a population of around six million.

According to Corriere della Sera, a well known Italian daily newspaper, Dr. Pier Luigi Bartoletti, Deputy National Secretary of the Italian Federation of General Practitioners, explains that every single person with Covid-19 that has early signs, like a cough or a fever for example, is now being treated with the anti-malaria drug.

The drug “is already giving good results,” Bartoletti says while Malaysia reveals they have been using it since the very beginning. Bartoletti further adds that the drug:

“Must be used with all the necessary precautions, it must be evaluated patient by patient. It can have side effects. But those that take it are responding really well.”

  14. Manny says:

Bill you are a danger to people, always pushing idiotic stuff. I am surprised that you and your idiot god, trump, have not claimed that aspirin works against the virus.

They don’t know if it works or not, it like the guy that walked around throwing shredded paper over his head.

Someone asked why he did that, the guy replied, it keeps the elephants away.

There are no elephants here, the guy replies see it works.

They have no proof that it is working, they know that some people get well with it, but they have no proof that they would not have recovered if they had not done anything.

It may turn out to help, in the mean time those with lupus who do need the drug are suffering, because they can’t find the drug.

You like Trump have blood on your hands.

  15. Manny says:

As to Socraticgodfly, you must have missed the part where he states that he moderates, that means he keeps idiots like you from posting your stupidity.

While people do comment here, you can count in hour two hands how many people post, it is the same fools, like me and you.

I suggest you start your own blog, you will be a great success with the racists, the bigots, the truly deplorable people in America. With Rush claiming to have cancer, I think he is lying, who knows you could make your millions doing what he does, having crap come out of his mouth all day long.

  16. Manny says:

Raoult’s latest study, published online on Friday, raised a fresh wave of criticism from the scientific community.

Some patients treated with hydroxychloroquine reportedly died of cardiac arrest, according to newspaper Le Point, raising serious concerns about the risks associated with the treatment.

Bill wants to kill people? Bill and Trump have blood on their hands.

    https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/30/in-france-controversial-doctor-stirs-coronavirus-debate-156889

  17. Bill Daniels says:

    LOL, Manny!

Two points. One, look how you are fighting against any positive news or positive developments. Most average, apolitical people would say ‘gee, I hope that stuff works.” Second, have you ever seen a drug commercial? Virtually all drugs are contraindicated for some patients, and virtually all of them have rare, negative side effects. Even vaccines, which all of us except a select few wing nuts embrace, have some horrific side effects, in very rare cases.

Using your logic, using your exact logic, I’d say Manny wants to kill people, and Manny and Trump have blood on their hands, because they both support vaccines. See how that sounds?

Finally, let’s say, God forbid, you are stricken with the Wuhan virus. You’re less than a day from being intubated. You have no heart problems. Are you going to refuse the Trump cocktail? Put another way, let’s say it isn’t you, but your son. Still going to refuse? Is your TDS really that strong?

  18. C.L. says:

I thought y’all were going to stop feeding Bill Daniels.
