Crabb: Not retiring

I posted earlier that I’d heard a report which indicated that State Rep. Joe Crabb would not be running for reelection after this session. One of Stace‘s readers contacted Crabb’s office and was told quite emphatically that this is not the case. Though it’s obviously my bad for not pursuing that myself, it’s not clear to me that this is the end of the story. Crabb might prefer to announce his retirement on his own terms rather than let word dribble out via constituents and nosy bloggers, and if so then his staff person’s denial is perfunctory. That said, until he does make such an announcement, we should not consider his status to have changed. My apologies for any confusion this may have caused.

You have a point. I didn’t bother to check since their office usually doesn’t say much. It wasn’t any confusion, really. But these rumors have happened before and he keeps running!

Anyway, no apologies are needed. I hope I didn’t sound like I was slamming ya. You actually caused someone to check! Great job!

    Who says blogs aren’t effective?!?

Not at all. Mostly, I wanted to emphasize that any failure was mine and not my source’s. I could have made a phone call but didn’t. Someone else did, and here we are. No worries here.

Not the end of the story by any means. Crabb personally told Craddick chief of staff Nancy Fisher that he would not be running for re-election. There were witnesses. Crabb can only always change his mind, of course. But it sounds more like the case of a staff that has not been informed that their boss is on his way out. Prediction: Crabb will retire but will announce it later, on his own terms and when the Legislature isn;t in session.
