Trader Joe’s coming to Houston

And there was much rejoicing.

Trader Joe’s, the offbeat grocer whose most popular products include frozen chicken tikka masala, pumpkin ice cream and low-cost Charles Shaw wines nicknamed “Two Buck Chuck,” is expanding into Texas with stores planned in Houston and Dallas.

Specific locations have not been named, but the California-based company said in an email Tuesday that it has wanted to be in Texas for a long time.

“We are a company that grows in a very controlled and thoughtful way in order to maintain the Trader Joe’s customer experience,” spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki said. “We’re excited about bringing Trader Joe’s to the wonderful cities, towns and neighborhoods in and around Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and beyond.”

The company said it is looking for sites but would not say when new stores would open.

See Swamplot and Eating Our Words for a variety of reactions ranging from “meh” to “woo hoo!”. If you’re in the latter group, you can fill out this form and tell them where you’d like them to build that first Houston location. What’s your reaction to this?

I’m ECSTATIC that TJ’s will be coming to Houston! I’m really hoping that they will build a store in the Katy area where they would do an outstanding business!

FINALLY!!!! As a transplanted West Coast resident who grew up with TJ’s, it’s about time! I’m STOKED!!! A location on Memorial near Wilcrest, Kirkwood or Dairy Ashford would suit me just fine.

I am so glad you are going to open in Houston. My friends and relatives who have visited me in California can hardly wait and neither can I. I am tired of shipping their favorite things and paying twice what it costs me to ship them. Hurry, Hurry, Hurry.

  5. […] Not that this makes us old, mind you. We heard about Trader Joe’s coming to Houston in May, and a couple of weeks ago the rumors started flying that they were looking at the Alabama Theater […]

What an awesome thing. Living in the SF bay area up until these past 3 years, I miss Trader Joes. Being in Houston, would remind me so much of the home base I love & miss. Trader Joes’ carry award winning products, fresh products, reasonable and a fun & great place to shop. Even cheaper than Whole Foods and just as good or better.

Can’t wait for you Trader Joes & Two Buck Chuck! Please hurry.
