Owls hammer Horns

The Rice Owls whupped the Longhorns 12-2 to move into the College World Series bracket finals, meaning they have to not lose twice to whoever wins the Texas-Miami game tomorrow night in order to advance to the finals. Woo hoo!

Man, if I had a webcam I’d put up some streaming video of me doing the happy dance. OK, maybe not – I am to dancing what Don Rumsfeld is to brevity and forthrightness. But believe me, I’m psyched. Go Rice!

UPDATE: Here are the Chronicle and Statesman stories on last night’s game.

Well there’s a good reason the CWS has double elimination… so that accidents like this can be corrected… :-p

I hope Rice can get through the next game with Humber. I’d hate to have them have to burn a game with Niemann to get to the final. CSF looks really tough on the other half of the draw and should Rice get to the final, they’ll need their best arms ready.

I’m sorta concerned that Townsend went as long as he did last night.

BTW I haven’t seen a guy sweat like that since Aaron Altman hosted the Evening News in Broadcast News.

  3. If Rice wins Wednesday (and I agree they should go with Humber), they’re off until Saturday, which gives plenty of rest to Niemann (who’d pitch Saturday) and Townsend (Sunday). If they lose on Wednesday, they’ll surely throw Niemann on Thursday, which would mean Townsend on Saturday and probably Humber on three days’ rest on Sunday, with Niemann on three days’ rest for Monday if needed. In that scenario, I wouldn’t be surprised if Niemann makes like Kenny Baugh and comes back on two days’ rest in the finals. He only threw about 90 pitches against SMS.

Geez, that’s complicated. I’m glad it’s Wayne Graham’s problem and not mine.

I thought it had to be raining in Omaha the way water was dripping off Townsend’s face. Didn’t seem to affect his performance too much.

And Byron, we’ll see if y’all get a chance to “correct” your “mistake” on Wednesday. 🙂

Texas’s legislature may be a laughing stock, but at least we have sports bragging rights 😉

Looks like they brought it, Byron.
