Friday random ten: The top 500, part 15

The penultimate list of my songs from the Rolling Stone Top 500 list.

1. Tumbling Dice – Linda Ronstadt (#424, orig. Rolling Stones)
2. Smoke On The Water – Deep Purple (#426)
3. New Year’s Day – U2 (#427)
4. Love Me Tender – Elvis Presley (#437)
5. Pink Houses – John Mellencamp (#439)
6. Come Go With Me – Georgetown Chimes (#441, orig. The Del-Vikings)
7. Pressure Drop – The Specials (#446, orig. Toots and the Maytals)
8. Soul Man – The Blues Brothers (#458, orig. Sam and Dave)
9. Rain – Flying Fish Sailors (#463, orig. The Beatles)
10. Search and Destroy – The Stooges (#468)

Am I the only one who remembers the movie “FM”? Here’s a clip of Linda Ronstadt singing “Tumbling Dice” from that movie:

What an awesome voice she has. I’ve never actually seen this movie, but I’ve owned a copy of its soundtrack, which is filled with kickass 70s music like the two Ronstadt tunes in that clip (“Poor Poor Pitiful Me” being the other song).

I’ve lost count of how many Blues Brothers tunes have made it into these lists. “Soul Man” may be their best-known song, but it’s not from the movie – they did it live on SNL, circa 1978. Here’s the best video of them doing it I could find – there are tons of homages and imitations out there – but it has embedding disabled, so go click the link to see it.

I’m almost to the letter U in my alphabetical listening, so I know I’ve played Pressure Drop and Search and Destroy by now, but I wouldn’t have recognized either of them if I’d heard them before finding those YouTube links.

Speaking of which, the entire song list report: Started with “Tore Down A La Rimbaud”, by Van Morrison. Finished with “Twisting By The Pool”, by Dire Straits, song #5625, for a total of 93 tunes this week. You’ll note that range includes “Tumbling Dice”, so it’s a twofer. Happy weekend, everyone!

  1. Jeff N. says:

Great clip, Charles. I did see FM when it was first released. Tom Petty was interviewed at the fictional radio station, and performed Breakdown live. First time I’d ever seen him play. Great music, including the title track by Steely Dan.
