Fifty-seven channels and nothing on

Maybe I expect too much out of the summer schedule these days, but the TV landscape is looking like a vast wasteland between now and fall premiers. I’m glad to see that The 4400 is back, and the promos for The Closer have me just about intrigued enough to program the TiVo for the pilot, but that seems to be it. Nothing else looks even remotely appealing. I mean, Dancing With The Stars? What fresh hell is that?

So the question is, am I missing anything worthwhile? Note that I don’t have premium cable, so stuff on HBO or Showtime is out. I don’t need much, just something reasonably intelligent to decompress with after a long day. What do you say?

I’m sorta looking forward to the dance show. But I’m a girl.

I’m set to TiVo that show on Thursday about the one-hit wonder bands. Beyond that, I figure the mailman is going to be thanking a higher power when the fall season starts, so he’s not picking up and delivering Netflix CDs to my mailbox on a daily basis.

I have the all the channels the whole lot. What’s on ?
Nothing, and more nothing, reruns of 10 and 12 year old films. I too just caught part of dancing with the stars. What a piece of …. I would rather see dancing at the bars or stuff a star in a jar.

Most of what I’m TiVo’ing now is syndicated episodes of shows I only recently started watching – CSI, Without a Trace. I’m also thinking of TiVo’ing that miniseries “Into the West” and I’m also interested in “The Closer”.

There’s always the new crop of reality shows featuring Jerry Hall, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton’s mother.

Now that I think of it, maybe that should read “There’s always the new crap of reality shows…” 🙂

For some reason, I find myself drawn, against all reason and resistance, to Beauty and the Geek. So far I’ve managed to flee, and I’ll get over it eventually, but the geek in me finds it somewhat compelling. The “Worst of everyone” motif has a bit of train wreck to it, too.

On the real front, it’s probably going to be a good summer for Sci-Fi fans… As mentioned, the 4400 starts soon, and I believe Dead Zone is returning. SG-1, Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica are starting up again mid-July. On the animated front, Justice League is back into new episodes, though with Cartoon Network who knows how long that will last.

The sparse schedule may be a good thing – frees up a lot of TV time to rewatch all of Firefly in preparation for Serenity’s release 🙂

The Tivo recorded a show speculatively that I ended up liking. John Ratzenburger’s Made in America. Basically, the mailman from Cheers goes to factories where people make “real stuff” and explains how it’s done, with some history and folks-yism. Kinda like Mr. Rogers’ Magic Mirror but with more machismo. The episode I saw had Red Wing Shoes, a high-end pool table maker, and a 150 year old sourdough bakery in SF.

I’ve selected a season pass. The last time the Tivo did this to me, I got hooked on Sports Night.
