Teacher Man

Note to self: Obtain a copy of Frank McCourt’s latest book, if for no better reason than to see if his description of life at Stuyvesant High School matches up with my memory of it as it did for Julia. Oh, and also to see if he confirms or denies those rumors about him and that cute blonde math teacher. Hey, gossip never has an expiration date, you know?

we had a cute blonde math teacher?

  2. Yes! I don’t want to get into detail, on the not unlikely chance that these rumors were nothing more than that, but there was a cute blonde math teacher, and McCourt was rumored to have had a more than professional relationship with her. It’s the only piece of worthy gossip I can recall from Stuy.

Cute blond math teacher? All I remember was old, older, and Ms. Landesberg, who made Geritol Man himself look young.

I’m sorry, but I’m in the “never have read any of his books and never will category”. I’m still way to bitter about him as a person.

Charles, do you mean Ms. Schimmel? I remember her, vividly! If so, Teacher Man had good taste.

I remember skipping first period and going to the Ambrosia on first avenue and seeing him having breakfast there. Mr. McCourt was supposed to be teaching the very class I was skipping.

I graduated in ’83 and yes a lot of people thought he and Ms. Schimmel were an item. But it wasn’t like there was anything lurid or unprofessional about their conduct. It was more like, good for him, and if she has the patience for him, good for her.
