Interview with Joseph Carlos Madden

Joseph Carlos Madden

There’s one open Democratic seat in Harris County for the State House: HD137, in which State Rep. Scott Hochberg decided not to run for re-election. There are four Democrats vying to succeed Rep. Hochberg, and I will be presenting their interviews this week. First up is Joseph Carlos Madden, who currently serves as the Chief of Staff for Representative Garnet Coleman (D-Houston) and the Executive Director of the Texas Legislative Study Group (LSG), a public policy caucus of the Texas House of Representatives. I’ve definitely taken advantage of the LSG’s research in past sessions. My conversation with Madden is below, and you can read a brief interview he did with NewsTaco here:

this is the wrong candidate to support-heres why,hes a staffer for garnette coleman and garnett is in a fight 4 his life to win the dem nomination against ray hill-then theres a huge rep challenger awaiting,i do not support staff/candidates for the most part-garnett should know better – with the current political enviroment-it shuns staff candidates-keep your money and your votes away from this candidate.he is not going to win- let him do his warmup lap alone, not on your expense.

The voters of newly reconfigured District 137 are lucky to have a candidate with the qualifications and character of Joe Madden offering himself as a candidate. This is a young man who has a work ethic beyond reproach, smart as a whip and is truly “one of the people” and the last time I checked, he was doing all this on his time. Joe has a record of accomplishment to run on – and if you think not, check with the electeds and staffers in Austin and see who put the time and effort in during the past several sessions to keep our side up to snuff on the issues.

If I lived in District 137, this would not be a hard vote for me to cast and it would be for Joe Madden.

  3. Bob says:

Wow, a candidate with first hand in-depth knowledge about issues of poverty, taxation, health care, education and public safety. That’s pretty amazing when half the legislators can’t even read a bill and know what it does without a lobbyist telling them. This guy is smart and ready to tackle the big problems of this state. District 137 better snatch this one up.

  4. Jenny says:

I am very proud to know Joe Carlos. His knowledge and integrity are unmatched among legislators and staffers at the Texas House, and there is no one I trust more to fight for my priorities and values. Good luck Joe Carlos!

  5. Lucy Gomez says:

Jenny you are very true. I love your opinion and appreciate your words. I have the same words. Joe Carlos is a brilliant man and his staffers at the Texas House. Thanks!!!

  6. Monica Webb says:

I had the opportunity to work with Joe while at Legislative Study Group. I recall many overnighters in the office as he poured through reams of bills looking for hidden details that if passed would hurt Texans. His phone seemed to never stop ringing as he is the go to guy for information in the legislature. Joe is among the rare type than can juggle a circus but still take the time to explain complicated legislation with a gracious spirit. I trust Joe in the legislature becuase I was able to see how prudently he managed the Legislative Study Group financially while making sure that the needs of the office were met. The Texas Legislature needs Joe Madden becuase of his character and intelligence.
