Lincoln v. Calhoun

Kevin points me to this NRO article which addresses the question “what is it that Republicans really stand for?” I don’t agree with his assessment of what Democrats stand for, but it’s an interesting read nonetheless.

One quibble: It was John Cougar Mellencamp who sung “You’ve got to stand for something/Or you’re gonna fall for anything” (warning: multiple obnoxious popups; use Mozilla or a popup killer).

Weird — I remembered the Aaron Tippin song (it grated on my nerves, actually, as does Aaron Tippin generally) but I had forgotten the Mellencamp tune. Anyway, Owens does get the quote right from Tippin, which is slightly different than Mellencamp’s (though probably inspired by the same).

  2. Hmm. I’d never heard of the Tippin song. Maybe each wrote their song without knowing about the other, like Newton and Leibniz independently inventing calculus. Or something like that. 🙂
