Congratulations to the Florida Marlins, a very deserving World Series champion. Josh Beckett was amazing, and he needed to be since Andy Pettite pitched very well also. I’m rather surprised that the one name no one mentioned during the game last night in talking about Beckett was Johnny Podres, who threw a 2-hit shutout in Game 7 of the 1955 Series to give the Brooklyn Dodgers their only title. Whoever you want to compare Beckett and his effort to, the comparison will be favorable to the Marlin hurler.
The Yankees, by necessity, will be a very different team next year. I’ve got a longish post working on that, but I’m a little too depressed to do it right now. Enjoy it while you can, all you Yankee haters. We’ll be back.
But are they going to destroy the team like they did last time? I never understood that move – win the World Series then not finish above .500 for the next n years.
I don’t think that will happen to the Marlins this time. For one, their nucleus is mostly young players, none of whom earn much money. For another, Wayne Huizenga wanted to sell the team. I expect them to be largely intact next year.
Maybe there is something to the Knoblauch curse after all.
I’m not sure what the Yankees will try to do different next year. Maybe they can trade Nick Johnson and get Tino Martinez back. They certainly could have used some of his late-inning heroics this time.
Note that the Yanks haven’t won the Series since Ronan Tynan started singing “God Bless America” for them. I know where I’d start revamping.
The organist and Zimmer have already jumped ship, I notice. I haven’t liked that organist from the 1977 & 1978 Series forward. Zimmer, as an ex-Dodger, I don’t mind.
I’m just happy for Pudge. It’s hard to sympathize too much with the Yankees, because it is a given that they’ll be back.
